Breakdown
General Note:
This will be an immersive, ALL MALE production of The Taming of the Shrew. The production will take advantage of the recent advances in legislation toward gay marriage, retaining the original genders of the characters (the women will be women) while simultaneously providing a world where the values of Love and Marriage are evaluated within a queered perspective.
Additional material created for the production will be pulled from a selection of music (composed for the production, as well as arranged from the history of opera and Italian popular song), non-traditional acts of physical performance drawn from the world of circus, vaudeville-style acts inspired by the culture of commedia and other imaginative ways to immerse the audience in our world. Special skills will be welcomed and considered. The material will be created with a choreographer and music director and team of designers already thoroughly familiar with what it means to build an immersive world.
This production will be tonally provocative in addressing issues of sexuality, violence and exploration of identity.
SEEKING:
Kate
(MALE, Late 20’s-30’s) Willful, opinionated, smarter than most of the men surrounding her, Kate is deeply beautiful but sabotaged by the unforgiving mirror of the world around her. She still has vitality and passion ahead of her, but has chosen to shut herself away from it. Jealous of her father’s love for her sister and her sister’s ease in the world – her resentment has hardened into an offensive, before offense is necessarily given. Must have excellent facility with language, be an exceptional singer. Seeking actors of all ethnicities.
Petruchio
(MALE, Late 30’s-40’s) A gentleman of Verona. He is honest, virile and strong and impossibly sexy and aggravating. Not of the same world as the commerce driven Padua, he feels like he is from a more earthy and rustic place. He has brawn as well as brains. He, at first, appears to be crude and hardhearted, but eventually shows that under the surface he is intuitive, understanding and profoundly in love with his new wife. Has a terrific sense of humor and is the perfect partner for Katherine. The production imagines that Petruchio is from a culture that is traditionally patriarchal, which informs his views on women in society while allowing him to change as he encounters a very real woman with whom he must find equal footing. Must have excellent facility with language and comfort and experience with stage combat, dance and heightened movement. Seeking actors of all ethnicities.
Bianca/Haberdasher
(MALE, 20’s) Katherine’s younger sister. Bianca is the picture of delicate beauty and the essence of girlhood ripe for the plucking. She is cunning and knows how to get what she wants, but there is nothing overt or obvious in her handlings. This is her innate sensibility, and she is not intentionally or knowingly hurtful. Most are drawn in by her and are hypnotized by her beauty and charm. Haberdasher: Sweet and unaware that she is being used by Petruchio in his scheme against Katherine. She brings a cap ordered for Kate for Petruchio to inspect, and is immediately insulted by him. Must have excellent facility with language, be an exceptional singer (ideally, although not necessarily with a virtuosic falsetto range), and experience with dance / movement. Lucentio
(MALE, 20’s) He is the well-off son of a merchant from Pisa, Vincentio and the archetype of the beautiful virginal stud. He is in the prime of his youth, trying to graduate from boyhood and attempting to make something of himself. Perhaps not the best student, he is a bit of a procrastinator, and a step behind. Lucentio falls in love with Bianca, as soon as he hears her voice, then disguises himself as Cambio, a teacher, to woo Bianca secretly. Must have excellent facility with language, singing (ideally, but not necessarily in opera), and dance / movement. Please submit actors of all ethnicities.
