Director: James Ortiz

(This show is partially cast from the postponed, pre-pandemic production)

SEEKING:

[CANDIDE] – Range: C6-F3; BIPOC, an innocent and frank young man. Reads youthful, vulnerable. Conveys passionate, misguided, confused, heartbroken, exuberant, violent, rageful emotion. Comedic singer. Since this role is envisioned to be physical, clowning experience is a plus. Shakespeare or classical experience also a plus. Age: 30s.

OTHER ROLES:

[CUNEGONDE] – *CAST* – Range: E6-A3; A blonde beauty and Candide's love interest. Faithful, strong. Age 20-30.

[VANDERDENDUR] – *CAST* – Range: B5-C4;A villainous pirate who makes off with all of Candide's treasure. He is the very archetype of vicious colonial oppression. Age: 35-50.

SCHOOL OF ROCK

Rehearsal: 10/24/23

Opens: 11/17/23

Closes: 12/30/23

Director: Michael Unger

Actors of all diversities are encouraged to audition.

SEEKING

ADULTS:

[DEWEY FINN] –Rock Tenor (B2-A5); Dewey is a struggling rockstar (in his own mind) who is kicked out of his band, No Vacancy, at the beginning of the show. In need of money, he impersonates Ned Schneebly and gets a substitute teacher job at the Horace Green School Prep School, where he creates the School of Rock band with the students, some of whom are musical prodigies. Dewey is usually wild, desperate, naive, dull-witted, and somewhat more childish than his students. PLAYS GUITAR WITH GREAT PROFICIENCY.

[ROSALIE MULLINS] – Soprano (A3-D6);Rosalie is the principal of Horace Green and is very uptight and traditional at school. However, she feels an intense amount of pressure from work, which is what causes her to be so high-strung. She has a secret love of rock and roll music, and longs to be as carefree as she once was.

[NED SCHNEEBLY] –Baritone (C3-F#4); Dewey's longtime friend, former bandmate, and current roommate. Ned is very easily manipulated and tends to let people walk all over him—especially his girlfriend, Patty. He still loves rock and roll music but is held down by Patty. He is a substitute teacher and is impersonated by Dewey at Horace Green.

[PATTY DI MARCO] –Mezzo Soprano (B3-E5); Ned's girlfriend. She is demanding and domineering and doesn't let Ned make any decisions for himself. She resents Dewey and wants him out of the apartment and out of her and Ned's lives.

[ADULT ENSEMBLE] All ranges to a high standard. A broad range of men and women, all shapes, diversity, and sizes. Looking for 6 cast members to cover multiple roles, including bandmembers, various teacher and parent roles and other adult authority roles.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR YOUTH PERFORMERS: Instrumentalists are asked to submit via video first, as we will not have full instrument set up available at initial auditions. Further video instructions are listed below.

*NO DOUBLE CASTING TO OCCUR FOR ANY OF THESE ROLES

[SUMMER] –Range: A3-D5; Summer is a high-achieving girl who hates nonsense. Initially, she absolutely despises Dewey, but comes to love him and the band—or, perhaps, the power that comes with it. Eventually, she is willing to do anything to see them win the Battle of the Bands competition and, even more, become a team. Summer is one of the brightest students at Horace Green.

[TOMIKA] –Range: A3-D5; Tomika transfers to Horace Green after being accepted off the waiting list. She is shy and doesn't speak to anyone at school and feels as though she's not as intelligent as the other students. However, it turns out that she is a highly gifted singer, and becomes the secondary singer in School of Rock, behind only Dewey.

[ZACK] –Range: A3-D5 (PLAYS GUITAR); Zack is the band’s lead guitarist and also a talented songwriter. He desperately wants to impress his father, who’s usually too busy with work to take an interest in his family. PLAYS GUITAR WELL.

[FREDDIE] –Range: A3-D5 (PLAYS DRUMS); Freddy is a rambunctious boy, as shown when he repeatedly slams cymbals together disruptively during music class. He is constantly told he isn't intelligent—by both his own father and Summer—but, like Dewey, intelligence can come in a variety of ways. He appreciates Dewey seeing something in him that even his father cannot. PLAYS DRUMS WELL.

[KATIE] –Range: A3-D#5 (PLAYS BASS); Katie is a quiet, serious girl who keeps mostly to herself. She plays the cello at school but is quick to pick up the bass at Dewey's encouragement. She is stone faced when she plays and takes her instrument and the band very seriously. But not letting appearances deceive, she is a rocker! PLAYS BASS WELL.

[LAWRENCE] –Range: A3-D#5 (PLAYS PIANO/KEYBOARD); Lawrence is an unconfident boy who is also gluten intolerant. He initially believes that he isn't cool enough to be a part of the band, but Dewey is able to convince him that he's amazing. PLAYS PIANO WELL.

[SHONELLE & MARCY] –Range: A3-D5; Shonelle and Marcy are quieter girls who tend to blend into the background. They are School of Rock's backup singers and talented dancers.

[BILLY] –Range: A3-D5; Billy is a flamboyant and artistic with a love of style and fashion magazines. He is disgusted with Dewey's grungy outfit choices, and how no one else in the band shares his artistic vision. Despite all of that, he is confident in his styling choices and ends up being celebrated for his designs.

[SOPHIE & MADISON] –Range: A3-D5; Sophie and Madison are School of Rock's roadies, but, since the band doesn't go on tour, they are essentially backup dancers. Each girl is a talented dancer and they can often be found together, much like Marcy and Shonelle.

[MASON] –Range: A3-D5; Mason is a super-smart, nerdy, tech-savvy boy who designs all the lighting and special effects for the band using his laptop.

[JAMES] –Range: A3-D5; James becomes the band's security guard. During rehearsals, Dewey has him stand near the door, and if James sees anyone potentially who might blow School of Rock's cover, he has the job of alerting the rest of the band so they can hide the instruments.

[STUDENT ENSEMBLE] Additional classmates. Youth performers.

XANADU

[SONNY MALONE] – Range: C6-B3; A self-critical and depressed, mortal, chalk artist who falls in love with Kira. Handsome, but not particularly smart. He embodies 1980s pop culture and is very much a California dreamer. Age 20-30. ROLLER SKATES WITH PROFICIENCY.

[MELPOMENE] –(Medusa), Range: A5-G3); Kira's oldest sister. Mother of the Sirens. She is jealous that Kira is the leader of the muses rather than herself, and therefore creates the plot for her downfall. Muse of tragedy. Age 40-60.

[THALIA] –Range: C6-C4; One of Kira's older sisters and fellow muse. Muse of comedy. Doublings include Siren, Young Danny, Tubes Singer, and Cyclops. Age 20-35.

[EUTERPE] –Range: A5-G3; One of Kira's older sisters and fellow muse. Muse of music. Doublings include Siren, Andrews Sister, and Thetis. Age 20-35.

[ERATO] –Range: C6-G3; One of Kira's older sisters and fellow muse. Muse of lyrics and erotica. As Eros, she is responsible for shooting Kira with the arrow of love brought on by Melpomene and Calliope's spell. Doublings include Siren, Andrews Sister, Eros, and Hera. Age 25-45.

[TERPSICORE] –Range: C6-C4; One of Kira's older sisters and fellow muse. Muse of dance. As Hermes, the messenger of the gods, he is deeply masculine in voice but sassy and flippant in attitude.

Actor doublings include Siren, Tubes Singer, Hermes, and Centaur. Age 25-40.

[ENSEMBLE] – Cover various roles in the ensemble. Dance requirements: Standard. ROLLER SKATING A PLUS BUT NOT A NECESSITY.
