SONIA
early 45-50, Vanya’s step sister. Discontent, upset, regretful.

MASHA
50-55, Vanya’s sister; a glamorous and successful actress who goes gallivanting around the world.

SPIKE
25-30. An aspiring actor, sexy, self-absorbed, Masha’s new companion.

NINA
20-25; lovely, sincere would-be actress. Star struck and energetic.

CASSANDRA
30-50. Cleaning lady and soothsayer. African American.

Late 40-early 50s. Has for all intents and purposes retired from the world though he works full-time as a railroad cook.

BOY WILLIE
Late 20s-early 30s. He has an infectious grin and a boyishness that is apt for his name. He is brash and impulsive, talkative and somewhat crude in speech and manner.

LYMON
Late 20s-early 30s. BOY WILLIE's partner, he talks little, and then with a straightforwardness that is often disarming.

BERNIECE
30-35. Mother to an eleven-year-old daughter. Strong and reserved. She is still in mourning for her husband after three years.

AVERY
Late 30s-early 40s. Honest and ambitious, he has taken to the city like a fish to water, finding in it opportunities for growth and advancement that did not exist for him in the rural South.

WINNING BOY
Mid-late 50s. He tries to present the image of a successful musician and gambler, but his music, his clothes, and even his manner of presentation are old. He is a man who looking back over his life continues to live it with an odd mixture of zest and sorrow

GRACE
Mid-late 20s. Enjoys the nightlife. She is perceptive and doesn't like to cause trouble, or be around trouble
