Breakdown
Seeking:
[SWEENEY TODD] (Male, 40’s, Bass/Baritone F2 - Gb4) A wrongfully imprisoned barber. He returns to London after 20 years seeking to right the wrongs committed against him. Father to Johanna. The only way he sees to right the wrongs is to take bloody revenge. Charismatic star role. This is a tormented man who is haunted by what his life could have been.
[JUDGE TURPIN] (Male, 50’s-60’s, Bass/Baritone E2 – F#4) A lecherous, corrupt public official who portrays himself as a sanctimonious authoritarian. He takes advantage of his position in the city and is responsible for imprisoning Todd.
[THE BEADLE] (Male, 40’s-50’s, Tenor D3 - D5) A pompous public official. He is deeply loyal to the corrupt Turpin. Willing to do anything, regardless of the law. Completely desensitized to the evil he commits, arrogant, but essentially a conniving weasel of a man.
[PIRELLI] (Male, 30’s-40’s, Tenor B2 - C5) A flamboyant, phony, Italian rival barber. A charlatan with a secret past.
[BEGGAR WOMAN] (Female, 40’s, Soprano Ab3 – F5) A deranged and schizophrenic woman who is greatly haunted by her past which hides a dark, surprising secret.
[ANTHONY] (Male, 20’s, Tenor or Lyric Baritone Bb2 - F4) Handsome, romantic, sometimes naïve. An impetuous youth. Often acts without thinking. A sailor by trade, he helps Todd return to London and unexpectedly falls in love with Johanna.
[JOHANNA] (Female, 20’s, Soprano Bb3 – A5) A spritely girl, full of innocence, constantly yearning for freedom. A caged bird kept captive by Turpin away from the outside world. Todd’s long-lost daughter and Turpin’s ward. Loveable and very beautiful.
[TOBIAS] (Male, 20’s (to play teens), Tenor Bb2 – Ab4) A poor, orphaned youngster apprenticed to Pirelli and also his street hawker and plant. Extremely limited intelligence, but all heart. He is taken in by Todd and Lovett after Pirelli meets his unfortunate death.
