BREAKDOWN

Based on mesmerizing true events, Summerland tells the riveting tale of William H. Mumler, a spirit photographer with a talent for taking haunting images of the dead. Set in 1869, the story follows Mumler’s meteoric rise and fall, from his wildly successful studio business, which boasted Mary Todd Lincoln as a client, to his indictment for fraud. Did Mumler really capture the visits of loved ones from beyond the grave? Or were his living subjects the victims of unspeakable deception meant to prey upon their longing to believe? Summerland is a gripping and suspenseful world premiere in which the camera provides an invitation to the truth between two worlds.

Seeking:

William H Mumler

Male, 40’s-50’s- An innocent but not a fool. He truly believes in the Spirits and is not fooled by Tooker--Mumler senses that he is there to find evidence of trickery. He has a temper and a quick wit. Avuncular. He appears naive about his wife and feels ultimately betrayed and is broken by play's end. Large man, spirit photographer.

Joseph Tooker

Male, Early 30’s- A slight, small man. One-armed. He has a dark secret. An investigator. A sharp, dogged, vindictive policeman--yet likable and witty. He is Determined to unmask Mumler as a fraud, but he has a dark secret that ultimately undoes him--forcing him to face his past. He is a broken man by the end of the play.

Mrs. Mumler

Female, Early 30’s- Wife of Mumler. She is smart, shrewd, sassy and sexy--with powers that are unclear. Is she just a brilliant savant regarding human nature or are her trances real and she has the power to contact the other side? She gives away very little. A survivor. A somnambulist. Mysterious, beautiful and dangerous.
