Preparation
Actors will have 3 minutes to audition

For 4/17: Prepare a brief monologue

For 4/18: Prepare either a brief song, a brief monologue or both (accompanist will be provided on this day only)

All bring picture/resume stapled together

Other
AEA members without appointments will be seen as time permits

Zack
28 Male. American, Caucasian. Married to Abby. Charming, loving, occasionally controlling, seemingly capable professional. Has low level marijuana dependency & a dark secret

Alioune
25 Male. French-Senegalese (dialogue largely in English w/French accent & some in French). Married to Amina. Landlord for Abby & Zack’s apartment. Pleasant, upstanding, understanding family man; doesn’t want to be taken advantage of

Amina
25. Female. French-Senegalese (dialogue largely in English w/French accent & some in French). Married to Alioune. Fierce, loyal mama bear. Tells it like it is when no one else will. Has confident & commanding presence

22 female, Jewish. Liam & Jonah’s first cousin. 2/3 body, 1/3 hair. Very connected to her Jewish heritage. Highly opinionated; easily lets her defensiveness turn into aggression towards opponents. Subtlety not in her nature. Argumentative. Actor must have ability to approach material with sense of humor, wit, & possess strong comedic timing

LIAM HABER
25 male, Jewish. Daphna’s cousin. Attractive, put-together young professional on a trajectory for success. Asian Studies PhD student. Former Fulbright scholar in Japan. Has as much sense of humor as an overdue library book. Lost tolerance for Daphna a long time ago; isn’t discreet about the way he feels

JONAH HABER
21 male, Jewish. Liam’s younger brother. Sometime-UVM sophomore. Regular guy. Less lanky than his brother. Less brainy. More brawn. More heart. Sensitive. Doesn’t always speak up but makes a strong impact when he does. Caught in middle.

MELODY
24 female, clearly not Jewish. Liam’s girlfriend. Quite pretty, blonde. Dreams of being an opera singer but unaware that she has terrible voice. Currently working as an administrator at a H.S. for underprivileged kids; only a treble clef tattoo to remind her of her love of music. Peacemaker w/ positive outlook on life.

17. African-American male. Lead. Extremely smart. Effeminate. Senior student, head of the Charles R Drew Prep School for Boys Choir. Opinionated, outspoken, charismatic, with a sly sense of humor. Must be comfortable singing gospel hymns.

ANTHONY JUSTIN JAMES
18. African-American male. Senior student, baseball player, choir member. Athletic and looks it. Hunky. Kind, level-headed, likeable. Pharus’s roommate. Must be comfortable singing gospel hymns.

BOBBY MARROW
16. African-American male. Junior student, choir member, nephew to the headmaster. Arrogant, confrontational, entitled. Alpha male. Must be comfortable singing gospel hymns.

DAVID HEARD
17. African-American male. Senior student, choir member. Religious –planning to be minister, but wrestling with what that means for his sexuality. Peace-maker, usually a boy of few words. Must be comfortable singing gospel hymns.

JUNIOR BLAKE
16. African-American male. Youngest of the group. Junior student, choir member. The most innocent of the boys. Bobby’s milder sidekick. Must be comfortable singing gospel hymns

HEADMASTER MARROW
Early 40s-late 50s. African-American male. Youngest & current Headmaster at the School for Boys. Dedicated to maintaining the high standards and mission of his school. Devoted, committed, impassioned. Shrewd operator when it comes to school politics. Man with heart who leads with tough love. Bobby Marrow’s uncle.

MR. PENDLETON
Late 60s-early 70s. White male. Returning professor at the School for Boys. Teaches African American History. Avuncular in nature with life experience to share. Humble & down-to-earth. Challenges students to think beyond their immediate perceptions of the world they live in. At first seems like an absent-minded professor but actually has a great deal of passion and fire.

MABEL
20s, female. Country bumkpin ingénue; becomes a silent film star after a series of unlikely adventures that take her across the country. Brave, heroic, funny, charming, beautiful, & smart. With a great deal of pluck and spunk. Part Mary Pickford, part Theda Bara.

ROSCOE
20s, male. Innocent, sheltered scion of a Montana pioneer family. Out of love, follows Mabel on her improbable journey to Hollywood, but constantly crippled by his cowardice & indecision. Is not the brightest but honest & well-meaning. Part Buster Keaton, part Charlie Chaplin.

Ensemble of 4 Supporting Actors:
2 character men & 2 character women, 25-60, any ethnicity. Plays some 50 other roles. Must be extremely versatile, creative, playful with excellent verbal & physical comic timing.

Spirited actors with solid voice & movement training, the ability to listen & play with others, & ideally with a great understanding of the silent film era.

Mid 30s-early 40s, female. An Upper West Side mom who can't quite leave her rock n' roll wild-child past behind. Vital, sexy, and a little tough. Warm & funny mother and wife; unfussy. Has a reckless streak, & a yearning for the excitement of her youth. A complicated woman. Any ethnicity.

NARRATOR
30s. Female. Soulful, sometimes wry, observer. Woman with a story to tell, and the charisma to draw us in. There's a large & surprising well of passion beneath her affable demeanor. Any ethnicity.

TOM
Mid 30s-early 40s. Male. Sexy, charismatic bar owner. 100% downtown. Not necessarily a bad guy, but certainly a bad boy. Very cool customer; lives life in the moment. Getting older, & starting to wonder if there's more to it all. Any ethnicity

MICHAEL
Late 30s-early 40s. A kind man, a good dad, the one you marry. Handsome, content, a calming presence. Happy & proud of the life he and Sara have built together. Kind of guy who usually takes the high road, but when he's pushed off it, he is capable of explosive anger. Any ethnicity.

30s. Female. Chinese American from Boston traveling abroad in Rome. Artist of multiple mediums, she teaches illustration and design at RISD. Effortlessly pretty, well-traveled, & a free-spirit in a gentle easy-going way. At start, she is still trying to hold on to the last vestiges of her marriage, but slowly begins to come to terms with her fracturing relationship

ALEX
25-35. Male. Italian owner of the B & B at which Raina, Dana, & Lewis are staying. Heavy Italian accent. Quiet, polite man who prides himself of his hospitality. Enjoys spending time alone as a welcome refuge from his tumultuous home life. Still grieving the loss of his brother, & is at a loss when it comes to his rebellious nephew

LEWIS
39, Male. Brother to Dana, born in Texas, living now in Manhattan. Traveling abroad in Rome with his sister. Just married his handsome partner in a small ceremony but he hasn’t told Dana yet. Easygoing when matched against his sister. Warm, gregarious, with a quick wit. Planned this trip in an effort to reengage Dana & draw out her vibrant past personality

DANA
38, Female. Sister to Lewis, born in Texas and now living outside of Dallas. Traveling abroad in Rome with her brother. Put-together suburban mom with a type-A personality. However, after a night of drinking, she becomes bold, brassy, & clever. She hopes this trip will help her recreate her childhood closeness with Lewis but instead only finds herself longing for home
