SYNOPSIS: The new millennium approaches. Four friends, Carly, Willow, Ash, and Baxter, work at a dying American mall as they prepare for the biggest karaoke contest in America, Sing Out! Could this finally be their way out? The big day is only a few days away, and the world around them changes in a blink of an eye.
Note: Carly, Willow, Ash, and Baxter sing.
CARLY- Latina-late 20s - Second generation with goals to change the world.
WILLOW - Caucasian - late 20s Carly’s best friend, coffee expert, and delightful extrovert.
ASH - Trans Masc or Non-Binary. Person of Color - late 20’s could’ve been the inspiration for MacGyver, had Ash been born yet.
BAXTER - Black- Late 20s former football player, he and Ash are thick as thieves, and he couldn’t have asked for a better brother.
GREG - Caucasian Man- late 40s - 50s. He’s exactly who you think he is. Corporate shill. Manager of the Chinese food counter. Doubles as: TV ANNOUNCER, CUSTOMER, TV REPORTER, and all other VOICES.
Note: The countries of origin can suit the actors chosen.
All have American mouths. All raised working class. No character, however, is of Western European origin/ethnicity, or from a country of greater liberalism than the United States, especially as it relates to marriage equality in 2006 or earlier. These characters have grown up within working class multicultural America. They have connections, feelings, and knowledge of their countries of origin (or, in Henry’s case, the country of his parents).
G: ages 17-21, female, born in another country and brought to America young. Working class.
B: ages 17-21, male, born in another country and brought to America young. Working class.
Henry: older, male, first generation. Born in America of immigrant parents. Working class.
