Breakdown
Rounding Third is about two dads coaching a Little League team. They approach competitive sports differently and have their own, very real reasons for their approach. The “win at all costs” verses the “let’s just have fun” mentality is the center point of the play. Although it is a comedy, it never tells you if one approach is right over the other. As the two characters struggle to communicate their opposing philosophies to the team, they reveal who they are.
The following 2 roles have already been CAST. This audition is for possible repalcements if needed:
DON:
(mid 30s to mid 40s) Long-term head coach of a Little League team of 11 year olds. Don is a grown-up man-child who still holds on to losing the League championships when he was 11 years old. A working-class guy, Don believes that winning is the key to having a good time. He is not the Hollywood cliché of a “jerk” father --just maybe has some mixed up priorities. His son is one of the better players on the team.
CAST. Performers will be considered as possible replacements, should any become necessary
MICHAEL:
(mid 30s to mid 40s) The new assistant coach of a Little League team. Works with computers as a private contractor for a bureaucratic government entity. Michael is sensitive, and he believes that trying is the key to having fun, without the pressure of winning. He wants desperately to have an activity to share with his son. Michael’s son is one of the worst players on the team. Both men seem to be working out things they wish were different about their childhood.
