Breakdown

Rachel is an original musical about the life of Rachel Carson. Struggling to find her place in the world as a scientist and a woman, Carson's skill as a writer eventually brings her success. However, when the destructive nature of DDT and other pesticides is brought to her attention Carson jeopardizes everything she's earned to take a stand for the Earth.

The show is through-composed and vocally demanding, and requires legit singers.
Rachel was an official selection in the developmental reading program at NYMF last summer, and will be presented this summer at the Wild Project as a part of the Fresh Fruit Festival.

seeking

CARSON
(F) – Alto (50s)
Thoughtful, quiet, and academic, rather unobtrusive. Deeply committed to the living world, holds herself to an uncompromising standard of morality. She loves those closest to her with all her being, but has a tendency to withdraw into herself when working so can be unintentionally hurtful. More mature and contemplative than her younger counterpart. Range: F3 - E5 (tessitura: Ab3 - C5)

RACHEL
(F) – High Alto (20s/early 30s) Bears none of the weight of experience of her older self. Very much an academic and generally quiet, but she has a fierce certainty about life and less of Carson’s thoughtfulness. Idealistic, energetic, and willing to take risks for what she wants and passionately believes. Range: Ab3 - Eb5

MARIE RODELL
(F) – Alto (can play 40’s to 60’s)
Rachel’s literary agent and long time friend. Outgoing, over-the-top, and very enthusiastic. A deep love of and commitment to writing and a fierce intelligence. Range: Bb3 - C5

JULIUS HYMAN
(M) – Bass-Baritone (age flexible)
A spokesman for DDT. Smooth-talking and slick, a born salesman. Range: G2 - D4

Female 1
Soprano (30’s)
Mary Scott Skinker: Rachel’s college biology teacher, and afterwards, her friend. Passionate about science and about teaching. This role also requires a lot of doubling. Range: A3 - A5

Female 2
Alto (60’s/70’s)
Maria Carson: Rachel’s mother. Loves her daughter obsessively. This role also requires character doubling. Range: Eb3 - Bb4

Male 1
Tenor (age flexible)
Ribicoff: A Senator, under pressure from both the chemical companies and – increasingly – the public to take a position on the issue of DDT and other pesticides. This role also requires character doubling. Range: D3 - A4

Male 2
Bass (age flexible)
Higgins: Rachel’s supervisor at her government job. He is a bit of a jokester, but thoroughly fair and compassionate.
This role also requires character doubling. Range: A2 - D4
