Breakdown

CHARLES STRICTLAND
Potential Client, White
Age: 40’s
Wealthy, powerful, successful and used to getting his own way. Genteel and entitled. Accused of raping an African-American woman with whom he was having an affair. Wants his lawyers to believe in his innocence. Desperate “to wipe the slate clean,” he wants to be acquitted of the legal crime of rape as well as of any stain of racism. Unused to having to ask anyone for anything, he is deeply uncomfortable with and destabilized by this new vulnerability, as well as his lawyers’ blunt and brutal discussion of the racial issues inherent in his case. Disturbed by any intimation that he might harbor racial bias.

HENRY BROWN
Lawyer, African-American
Age: 40’s
An excellent lawyer. Partner and co-owner of the firm Lawson and Brown. Confident. Incisive. Extremely smart, with a sharp, quick intelligence and great facility with words and ideas. Self assured and excellent at what he does, he is impatient with fools and foolish illusions. Blunt and brutal in his assessment of his client and the realities of the world, but not without compassion. He understands that the only way to win this case would be “by dealing with the sordid.” Keenly aware of the pitfalls of the case.

SUSAN
Lawyer, African-American
Age: 20’s
A first year associate at the law firm Lawson and Brown. Pretty, Ivy League educated, savvy and very smart. Ambitious. Poised and Self-possessed, while still somewhat playing the role of the precocious student. Eager and determined to play at the highest levels. Wrote her college thesis on the “Structural Survivals of Racism in Supposedly Bias-free Transactions,” and on the lookout for the tinge of racial and sexual bias. Not naïve, but less cynical than she pretends to be.
