We are seeking submissions from actors, singers, and musicians for our 16th Season.

COVID-19 SAFETY INFORMATION: All actors auditioning for Portland Playhouse’s 2023- 2024 season must wear a mask that covers the mouth and nose at all times. You may remove your mask when you are actively acting or singing. For the safety of yourself and others, we encourage you to take a COVID antigen test before you come in, though it is not required.

An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of this audition.

PREPARATION

For your general audition, please prepare two contrasting contemporary monologues or a monologue and a brief cut of a song, totaling no more than 4 minutes. If you choose to sing, you may do so a cappella, with an instrumental track, or accompany yourself on an instrument. An accompanist will also be provided. Please bring a physical copy of your headshot and resume with you to your audition. Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide. BREAKDOWN

Equity encourages everyone participating in the auditions to wear a two-ply cloth face mask, surgical mask, singer’s mask or respirator (N95, KN95 or KF94). Single-ply face masks, gaiters and bandanas are not recommended. Singer’s masks can be found at www.broadwayreliefproject.com/singersmask.

Equity encourages members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing rooms.

Holding/Audition room information:

The audition room: 625 square feet and can accommodate no more than 8 individuals at a time. The holding room: 320 square feet and can accommodate no more than 6 individuals at a time.

A note about casting (adopted from language with consent originally created by Kevin Kantor and Emily Traquin of Actors Theatre of Louisville):

Most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the following character descriptions. However limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide.

Casting all adult characters for 7 tracks. For this production we cast a company of actors who all play multiple roles across gender, age, and race. Actors also sing and play multiple instruments. Strong musicians are encouraged to audition.

EBENEZER SCROOGE - The miserly owner of a London counting-house.

MARLEY/PAST/PRESENT/FUTURE - The spirits who visit Ebenezer Scrooge.

BOB CRATCHIT/MR. FEZZIWIG/BUSINESSMAN/OLD JOE - Scrooge's clerk, a kind, mild, and very poor man with a large family / The jovial merchant with whom the young Scrooge apprenticed / A gentleman who visits Scrooge seeking charitable contributions / A shop owner who buys the belonging of Scrooge.

MRS. CRATCHIT/MRS. FEZZIWIG/MRS. DILBER - Bob's wife / Fezziwig’s wife / Scrooge’s laundress who steals his clothing and sells it to Old Joe.

FRED/FAN/BUSINESSMAN - Scrooge's nephew / Scrooge's sister; Fred's mother / A gentleman who visits Scrooge seeking charitable contributions.

This work was performed as a one-person show as a part of the author’s ongoing On the Road: A Search for American Character series. It is the author’s intention that actors would portray characters outside of their own race, gender, age, and “type. The actor is asked to take each real person at their word and with their word, to give full attention to their every utterance as recorded in the script.

SHERRY/RENATA/DESI - Another bad kid at church / An abstract artist and café waitress / A den mother and social engineer.

MR FRANKLIN/JOOP/MR. VENUS - Church pianist, youth choir director / A body liberationist / A performance artist.

EDWINA/MARIANNA/SUDABEY - A teenage goddess / A neo-hippy / An avant-garde filmmaker and writer.

All actors except those playing the Narrator, Youth, and Mother also play miscellaneous, nameless roles such as church-goers, family members, airplane stewardesses, etc.

Please note; because of the ever changing landscape due to COVID-19, our season is subject to possible alteration. This production may be filmed and/or recorded under Actors’ Equity Association guidelines, and Actors’ will be given at least 24 hours notice per AEA requirement.
