Breakdown

From Dave Malloy and Rachel Chavkin, the award-winning creators of Natasha, Pierre, & the Great Comet of 1812, PRELUDES is a musical fantasia set in the hypnotized mind of Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninov.

SEEKING:

RACHMANINOV:
Male, 20s-30. The famous composer/pianist. Introverted and enigmatic, but with a strong sense of humor. Rach is anxious and plagued by self-doubt. Possibly very tall, sizable and slightly awkward in his own skin--not quite leading man physically—encouraged. BARITONE/TENOR - rough rock/folk vocal style preferred. Ab2-E4. OPEN TO ALL ETHNICITIES.

NATALYA:
Female, 20s-early 30s. Rachmaninov's cousin and eventual wife. Kind and compassionate, but with a sharp wit. Although she looks very youthful, she is an old soul who is wise beyond her years and carries herself with a maturity. She is patient and kind with Rach's depression, helping and humoring him while trying to get him better. LYRICAL AND/OR FOLKY SOPRANO. B4-F6. OPEN TO ALL ETHNICITIES.

DR. DAHL:
Female, 30s-40s. The famous hypnotherapist who treated Rachmaninov when he had a nervous breakdown. Physically striking. Alternately compassionate and terrifying. Sultry cabaret ALTO - D4-D5. Please note: although Dahl was a man in real life, in this production the character is a woman. OPEN TO ALL ETHNICITIES.

The following roles have been CAST. Actors auditioning will be considered for possible replacements if needed:

CHALIAPIN
[Role CAST]:
Male, 20-30s. Rachmanivnov’s friend and a star opera singer. He is charismatic, bold, full of life and passionate. Always supportive and encouraging to Rach. Must have comic chops. OPERATIC BASS - C2-F#4, plus falsetto to D5. Low C required. OPEN TO ALL ETHNICITIES.

TCHAIKOVSKY/TOLSTOY/CHEKOV/TSAR/ETC
[Role CAST]:
Male, 50s-70s. Plays various historical and cultural figures. Carries the weight of all Russian history. Ancient sage. Should be an imposing, towering physical presence. BARITONE - Strong singer, folk/rock - B3-E4. OPEN TO ALL ETHNICITIES.
