• One must be classical (Shakespeare is preferred), the second piece may be classical or contemporary.
• Combined length of BOTH pieces should be LESS THAN TWO MINUTES.

All roles in Midsummer Night’s Dream are CAST. Auditioning actors will be considered for possible replacements or understudies.

Each actor will play multiple roles. Tracks have not been finalized but actors must be comfortable playing both male and female roles and have great ease and experience with Shakespeare’s language.

The Orator
20s-70s, male or female. A professional orator hired by The Old Man to speak for him and explain the “meaning of his message”. The Orator’s arrival is greatly anticipated by the old couple. Since The Orator does not speak, the actor must possess great specificity with physical storytelling.

STUPID FU**ING BIRD

“sort of” adapted from Anton Chekov’s The Seagull

Seeking:

CON
20s - Inspired by Constantin in Chekhov’s Seagull. Son of Emma, friend to Dev and nephew of Sorn. He is loved by Mash but cannot return her affections. He is passionately in love with Nina but grows increasingly aware of her inability to return his affection.

EMMA
mid 40s-60s - Inspired by Arkadina in Chekhov’s Seagull. Mother to Con, sister to Sorn. A famous actress who is in a relationship with Trig, a highly acclaimed and famous writer. Emma naturally posses great authority among her family and friends, wielding her acting chops and life experiences to get what she wants at every turn. Outwardly she may seem selfish but as she puts it, “I’m doing the best I can.”

NINA
20s - Inspired by Nina in Chekhov’s Seagull. A young woman that lives near Emma’s estate. She acts in Con’s original play and spends a fair amount of time with him, but simply does not love him as he loves her – Nina prefers Trig. A hopeful young actress at the play’s beginning, she experiences great loss throughout the show, resulting in a radically changed demeanor in the final act.

TRIG
30s-40s - Inspired by Trigorin in Chekhov’s Seagull. A famous writer in a relationship with Emma. Consumed by the need to write, he does not romanticize his fame but considers it an uninteresting point of fact. He is captivated by Nina and pursues a relationship with her.

THE DING DONG

Mme.Pinchard:
A bit older. Deaf, gassy, and sweetly in love with her husband. She is a bit dowdy in appearance

ACTOR 1
To play 40s - (CAST) Lucy Vatelin: Lucy is the wife of a French lawyer. She dresses in a straight-laced manner, her hair tight and her clothes fashionable yet modest.

ACTOR 2
To play 40s - (CAST) Pontegnac: A cad. A dark suited Lothario who runs after every girl he sees. A bit of an overgrown teenager and a real schemer. Soldignac: A Swiss businessman. Genial, emotional and a little dim. Also a boxer. Pinchard: A country doctor on holiday to Paris with his wife. Easily irritated.

ACTOR 3
To play 30s - (CAST) Vatelin: A Parisian lawyer. A bit of a nerd, with his glasses and bowtie . Above all, he loves his wife even though he can act like a cad sometimes.

ACTOR 4
To play 20s – early 30s - (CAST) Redillon: A handsome French Dandy with standards. His clothes are ostentatious but he has a good heart underneath his lecherous exterior. Bellboy: A 17 year old virgin, trying his best to keep the hotel running. Policeman: A Parisian policeman.

ACTOR 5
To play 20s – early 30s - (CAST) MMe Pontegnac: A tough Parisian woman with a gruff exterior. She's suspicious of her husband's every move. A bit of a bulldog, she likes fine clothes and fine appearances. Fabiola: An Italian sex pot. She's alternately elated and suicidal within the same breath. Mandy: A New York seductress with Manhattan moxie. At times, a breathy, sweet siren like Marilyn Monroe. She's smarter than people assume and knows what she's doing.

All roles are available for non-traditional casting.
NOTE: The Pearl Theatre Company casts numerous roles from their 14 person Resident Acting Company. Guest artists (non-Resident Acting Company members) will be sought for many of the characters, particularly those who can play 20s-30s. Auditioning performers will be considered for all available roles throughout the season and for possible replacements should they become necessary.
