Breakdown

Nora-This role is cast.

Torvald Helmer
(male, 30s/early 40s): A successful member of the town establishment, nearing the summit of life, with a beautiful wife whom he loves and a fantastic new professional position. He is handsome, sexy, strong, principled, and decisive—but he’s also tormented by insecurities, occasionally has a quick and violent temper, and lives in fear of failure. PLEASE NOTE: This role requires nudity in the play’s final scene. No nudity at the auditions.

Dr. Rank
(male, 40s): Helmer’s best friend, secretly in love with Helmer’s wife Nora. A charming, cultured, distinguished man with a wonderful, wry sense of humor that veers toward being mischievous, with a wild, unpredictable streak. He’s dying of a terrible venereal disease, and though it’s done little to sap the vitality of his spirit, we can see in his drawn and tired face that he’s not well.

Christine Linde
(female, 30s/early 40s): Nora’s friend from years ago, newly returned to town after the death of her husband. She may have once been beautiful, but the rigors of a difficult life have caused her to become worn, even hardened. An eminently practical person and a survivor, she’s always in problem-solving mode.

Nils Krogstad
(male 30s/early 40s): A man at the end of his rope, a social pariah who’s only recently begun to earn back respectability. At the beginning of the play he finds himself at risk of losing everything he’s worked for, and so he resorts to blackmail. He’s not a villain, just desperate and driven to do something distasteful to him. One might find him sympathetic, though he wears his desperation like an old coat.
