Breakdown

Shortly before she is to travel with her tubercular immigrant father to Denver for his health, innocent, motherless Sonia is “ruined” by struggling young lawyer Albert Liebhartz in a fit of drunken madness. Albert had hoped to marry her, but is forced to marry slumlord Barney Bender’s daughter Cecilia, the nymphomaniac, instead. And while pregnant Sonia’s life degenerates into alcoholism and prostitution, Harry, Cecilia’s lovesick paramour chauffeur, has his own plans...

Actor 1 (m): plays

- Khirik: A functionary of the religious community -- cantor, matchmaker, etc. -- struggling to get by. 40s-50s.

- Harry: A young chauffeur. In love with his employer Cecilia, with whom he has a passionate relationship. Unscrupulous. Later a pimp and an alderman. 20s.

- Yerukhem: Saintly and sickly. Looks 50s at least.

Actor 2 (f): plays

- Khave: Albert’s mother. Matronly, upper-crust. 50s

- A Court Clerk

(Think Margaret Dumont.)

Actor 3 (f): plays

- Cecilia: Bender’s coarse nymphomaniac daughter. Very “old movie New York”. 20s.

- A Policeman

(Think Betty Boop.)

Actor 4 (m): plays

- Albert: Educated, sincere, completely devoted to his mother. At one point has a few drinks and becomes The Wolfman. Later wracked with guilt because of it.

- A Doctor

(A nice Jewish boy, race unimportant.)

===========
The following roles have been CAST:

Actor 5 (m- ALREADY CAST): plays Bender: A coarse and uncouth immigrant slumlord. 50. Also plays A Policeman

Actor 6 (f- ALREADY CAST): plays Sonia: A naive young immigrant. 20s.

=========
Director’s note: The play will be done in a broadly melodramatic style -- not cartoonishly or condescendingly, but nevertheless mechanical and ‘over the top’. Actors will not so much play the characters as play 19th century melodrama actors playing the characters. The pace is faster than in a contemporary naturalistic style, and every gesture and inflection is calculated for the effect it will have on the audience; it’s all about “indicating”. All actors will do multiple roles, some with very fast changes, so an ability to do vivid character work is essential. Non-traditional casting is welcomed.
