Breakdown

GEE'S BEND
by Elyzabeth Gregory Wilder
Director: Thomas W. Jones II
Music Directors: William Knowles and William Hubbard
1st rehearsal: 8/20/13. Runs: 9/12 – 11/3/13 (8 weeks)

The true story of the Pettway women of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. Through segregation, family turmoil, and the Civil Rights Movement, the women turn to quilting to provide comfort and context for their lives. These quilts, a labor of love and necessity, turn out to be valuable works of art. Featuring three strong women and one man and interwoven with a cappella gospel music.

Seeking:

Sadie: plays ages 15, 41, 78

Nella: plays ages 17, 44, 81

Alice and Asia: plays ages 34, 45 and 61

Macon: plays ages 25 and 51

Preparation instructions if auditioning for this show: Prepare 2 minute monologue. All actors must be able to sing a cappella gospel. Also prepare 16 bars of jazz, blues or gospel with accompaniment (or a cappella if auditioning on day without an accompanist). Need mix of soprano and alto voices.

A BROADWAY CHRISTMAS CAROL

Parody of “A Christmas Carol”, using Broadway showtunes. Actors play multiple characters in a fast-paced, very physical show.

Seeking:

Scrooge:
CAST. (actors auditioning will be considered for possible replacements if needed). Classic Dickens character. Vocal range: tenor.

The Woman Who Isn’t Scrooge:

CAST. (actors auditioning will be considered for possible replacements if needed). Actress plays multiple characters, including Marley, Mrs. Cratchit and Marie. Vocal range: High belt, as well as some soprano chops.

The Man Who Isn’t Scrooge:
CAST (actors auditioning will be considered for possible replacements if needed). Actor plays multiple characters, including Cratchit, Tiny Tim and Fred. Vocal range: G to G, and strong falsetto.

Preparation instructions if auditioning for this show: Prepare a one minute comic monologue and 16 bars of a Broadway show tune.

ELLA: FIRST LADY OF SONG

1st rehearsal: 1/2/14. Runs: 1/23 – 3/16/14 (8 weeks)

Ella Fitzgerald, her cousin Georgiana, who is her traveling companion, and her manager and jazz impresario Norman Granz tell her story both backstage and onstage. Featuring all of Ella’s most famous songs and a five piece band.

Seeking:

Ella: authentic Ella vocals, well versed in jazz idiom, must be able to improvise and rhythmically adapt, alto

Georgina (Ella’s cousin and traveling companion) middle-aged, sings a few songs.

Norman Granz (Ella’s white manager): tenor

Young Ella:

plays 13-25, must sing, dance, act. Sing jazz, and big band style, must scat

Preparation instructions if auditioning for this show: Prepare 32 bars from a song from the era by Ellington, Arlen, Rodgers and Hart etc.

THE THOUSANDTH NIGHT

1st Rehearsal: 3/26/14. Runs: 4/3 – 5/18/14 (8 weeks)

Guy de Bonheur is an actor attempting to avoid his fate by playing 38 characters from the Arabian Nights. A remarkable blend of comedy and pathos set in occupied France in 1943.

Seeking:

Guy de Bonheur (Understudy only):
age 35+, a French actor who acted out the many stories of the Arabian Nights at Café Shaherazad in Paris prior to being deported. Must be very physical when acting out the many stories and characters while trying to convince the gendarmes to release him. Literally playing for his life.

Preparation instructions if auditioning for this show: Prepare a 2-minute monologue that involves multiple character portrayals and some physicality. The script will be made available prior to the audition, but a monologue from the script is not required.

UNDERNEATH THE LINTEL

1st Rehearsal: 4/8/14. Runs: 4/17 – 5/25/14 (6 weeks)

A Dutch Librarian, a returned library book that is 113 years overdue and the obsession to find its owner. A clue scribbled in the margin, an unclaimed dry-cleaning ticket, a love letter written in Yiddish. Multiple clues and a world-wide search that ultimately decodes the meaning of life. A metaphysical detective story that is funny and fierce, quirky and smart.

Seeking:

Librarian (Understudy only):
Middle-aged. Good story-teller, some physicality (CAST, understudy role available)
