Prepare the brief song of their choice in the style of the show (or from the show). Bring sheet music; accompanist provided.

All should bring an updated photo & resume to the audition.

Breakdown

MEMPHIS tells the fictional story of Huey Calhoun, one of the first white disc jockeys who dared to play rhythm and blues music for white teenage listeners in the 1950’s.

Seeking:

Huey
Caucasian male, late 20’s-30’s, frenzied and bombastic, talks his way into becoming a DJ, ignores racial barriers.

Felicia
African American female, 20’s-30, beautiful and gifted singer, follows her heart and falls in love with Huey.

Delray
African American male, 30’s-40, Felicia’s older brother who owns the club where she sings, realistic, cautious and protective of Felicia.

Gladys
Caucasian female, 40’s-50’s, Huey’s stern, traditional blue collar, southern mother.

Gator
African American male, 20’s-30’s, works as a bartender at Delray’s. Hasn’t spoken since age 5 when he saw his father killed. As the story progresses he finds his voice again.

Bobby
African American male, 30’s-40, the janitor at Mr. Simmons radio station, full of personality and heart.

Mr. Simmons
Caucasian male, 40’s-50’s, the conservative owner of the radio station where Huey gets his start, a strong, commanding southern businessman.

Ensemble
An ensemble of 13 members. Characters are male and female, Caucasian and African-American. All voice types. Ensemble functions as the chorus and play small roles—ages 18-early 30’s.
