Preparation
Prepare a brief song (32 Bars) that shows off your Voice and Range in the Contemporary Musical Theater, Pop, Blues or Jazz style. (Please have a second contrasting song prepared, in case you are asked for it). **

Bring picture/resume stapled together

Breakdown

Seeking the following:

TOM:
African American Male, age 40-50. Baritone. Protagonist, An imposing figure, with gravitas a la Paul Robeson. His family’s safety is his primary concern. His unswerving loyalty and irrepressible faith make him the guiding force in the community.

CHLOE:
African American Female, age 40-50. Tom's wife with an ease of style for old spiritual type singing, a la Odetta, Mahalia Jackson, or Ethel Waters (to a G). Chloe is Tom’s bedrock, devoted to him on this earth and beyond.

ELIZA:
African American Female, age 25-35. Strong mix/belt with true, legit soprano to an A. George Harris’ wife. Mother of infant boy; on the run from her owner. She overcomes impossible odds to re-unite with her husband. Courageous. Determined!

ARTHUR SHELBY:
Caucasian, Southern Male, age 40-50. Bari/tenor. A benign, conflicted plantation owner. Over-extended in debt. Rather than forfeit his farm he capitulates to Simon, severing a life long friendship with Tom, his loyal friend.

GEORGE HARRIS:
African American Male, age 25-35. Bari/tenor. Eliza's husband. An inventor, proud and steadfast in his determination to live as a free man; he flees northward.

OPHELIA ST. CLARE:
Caucasian Female, age 40-50. Mezzo soprano to an E. New England teacher. Unmarried. She is First Cousin to Augustine and future ward to Eva and Topsy. Bent on educating the south about the Evil System; in love with Augustine.

SIMON:
Caucasian Male, age 40ish. Baritone. A slave trader. Gruff, unshaven; insidious sense of humor. Born of an evil DNA.

EMILY SHELBY/ RACHEL HALLIDAY:
Caucasian, Southern Female, age 35 -40. Mezzo Soprano/Soprano mix. Actress Plays Both Roles: EMILY: Arthur's wife. Bold, defiant; a force to be reckoned with; and RACHEL: Quaker. Dedicated to helping runaways. Befriends George and Eliza.

PHINEAS HALLIDAY:
Caucasian Male, age 36. Tenor. Rachel's husband. They are so connected as to become one person in manner and deed. Dedicated to helping runaways. Befriends George and Eliza.

AUGUSTINE ST. CLARE:
Caucasian, Southern Male, age 40-45. Bari/tenor. Eva’s father. Southern gentleman, plantation owner. Disenchanted in his marriage. Concerned for daughter’s welfare. Benevolent, progressive thinker.

MARIE ST. CLARE:
Caucasian, Southern Female, age 35-40. Contralto/mezzo. Eva's mother, wife to Augustine, 35-40. Selfish, narcissistic, delusional. Has difficulty expressing love. Exhibits treacherous indifference toward the welfare of her slaves.

TOPSY:
African American Female Child; Age 8-11. Wild, precocious. Way smarter than her behavior suggests. Having started out an abused child, she is adopted and educated by Ophelia. She is the lucky one! Vocally, must be facile with Pop & Contemporary Broadway.

EVA:
Caucasian Female Child, Age may be anywhere from 8 -11. Southern, The daughter of Augustine, a kind-hearted Southern gentleman; She is Unblemished; Happy in her innocence and love of all people. On her deathbed, she makes her father promise to give TOM his freedom and reunite him with his family. Vocally, must be facile with Pop & Contemporary Broadway.

ADAM:
African American Male Child, Age may be anywhere from 9 to 14. Tom's son, A devoted son, he is overwhelmed with grief at the sale of his father and the disruption of his family. He worships his Father, knows that he is a good man, and aspires to be just like him. Vocally, must be Facile with Blues & Jazz.

SHAKEEL:
African American Male Child, Age may be anywhere from 8 to12. Tom's son, less predictable and more mischievous than his older brother; He is very attached to his older brother, and Happy to be the second banana. Vocally, must be Facile with Blues & Jazz.
