Breakdown

Comedy is serious business to Chick Sherman in Bruce Graham's play, Funnyman. However, a lifetime of private and professional struggle rises to the surface, cracking the polished persona of the world's favorite funny man. This will be Mr. Graham’s seventh script produced at Circle. Previous productions include Desperate Affection (2003); Moon Over the Brewery (2004); According to Goldman(2007); Dex and Julie Sittin’ in a Tree (2008); Something Intangible (2010); and Stella and Lou (2014).

Chick Sherman: 60's. Former vaudeville star with a major film credit, now known as the funny pitchman for an antacid commercial. Onstage or on camera, he's a consummate showman who knows the exact science of comic delivery to get the best laugh; offstage he's a cantankerous hypochondriac, desperate to keep his career from tanking, adamant that he is a comic and not merely a comedian; yearns for the good old days but is disdainful of discussing his past.

Milt (Junior) Karp: 60's. Chick's manager, handler and best friend. They've been together since the good old days. He's used to picking up the pieces after Chick, but the game is getting old.

Katherine Sherman: Mid-late 20's. Chick's daughter who has come back to the City to take care of her father and work as an archivist at Carnegie Hall. After a lifetime of being brushed off, she is seeking a way into her father's heart and answers regarding her mother's mysterious death.

Nathan Wise: Late 20's-early 30's. Works in the same office as Katherine, but doesn't get much work done. Charming, funny; also from a show-biz family.

Matthew Baroni: 30's. Up-and-coming genius stage director, more interested in making it big than making art. Doesn't appreciate Chick's past fame or comic abilities.

Victor La Plant: 40's. Avant-garde playwright; his new play has gotten rave reviews in Europe, and he wants Chick to star in the US off-Broadway premiere. He has a very Parisian flare, but is really from Moody, Alabama.

Note: Specific lines in the script determine that Chick, Katherine and Nathan are Caucasians of Jewish decent; all other roles are open to all ethnicities.
