BREAKDOWN

FUCKING A: Hester Smith, the revered and reviled local abortionist, hatches a plan to buy her jailed son’s freedom—and neither murder nor deceit will deter Hester from her quest. In this post-apocalyptic remix of story and song, Hester’s branded letter A becomes a provocative emblem of vengeance, violence, and sacrifice.

**NOTE: Several actors cast in this production will play multiple roles. The ability to play a musical instrument may be incorporated into any role.

SEEKING:

HESTER SMITH
Female, any ethnicity, 40s-60s. The abortionist. A loving and fierce mother who will always figure out a way to clothe and feed her children before herself. Hester has one goal: to free her son. Tough-minded, devoted, practical, and ultimately willing to do anything to avenge an injustice done to her family.

CANARY MARY
Female, any ethnicity, 20s-30s. A friend of Hester’s and a kept woman to the Mayor. Generous to her friends and ruthless to her enemies.

MONSTER
Male, any ethnicity, 20s-30s. Charismatic but troubled. Was sent to prison as a child for stealing food. Life in prison has forced him to do some terrible things, but the gem of the open-hearted young boy he was still shines in his eyes.

BUTCHER
Male, any ethnicity, 40s-60s. Works as a butcher of animals. Owns his own sheep. Kind-hearted and generous. Has long admired Hester’s strength and resilience, and hopes to marry her. Cares deeply for his work, and tries to be as humane as possible in a violent profession.
