CHET SIMPKINS
18+ to play a timid African-American young man. Elderly at beginning and end of the play. 17 (secretly) as he begins training. From 125th Street in Harlem. Hard-working and quietly confident. Truly in love with flying. Understands its poetry.

OSCAR
African-American Tuskegee Airman and no-nonsense race man. “Anything and everything for my people.” 20’s. From Ottumwa, Iowa. Expectant father. Says what he thinks. Competitive, bold. Firmly resolved to prove the skeptics wrong.

J. ALLEN
Bahamian Airman, from the British West Indies. 20’s. Very British and very proud. Motivated by his father’s own unfulfilled dreams. Eager. Competent.

W.W.
Street-wise African-American zoot-suiter from the south side of Chicago. 20’s . Has an eye for the ladies and ego to spare. Cocky. Determined to succeed and impress. Doesn’t expect any favors. More there than you might first think.

CAPT. O’HURLEY
White Bostonian with a chip on his shoulder. Flight instructor. Contemptuous of his assignment and the men in his charge. Proud to be an aviator, and protective of the title. A product of his prejudices with a “take no prisoners” teaching style. 30’s.

BOMBER PILOT REYNOLDS
White Midwesterner. Also plays an instructor and Col. Snopes in Part One. 20’s to 30’s. A leader. Learns to deal with fear and to appreciate those who have his back.

BOMBER CO-PILOT SHAW
White Southerner. 20’s to 30’s. Also plays the Staff Sergeant and the Barman in Part One. Newlywed. Has never met his little girl. Proves to be a team player despite events from his past
