Breakdown

Tony®s, Oscars, Grammys … this modern-day classic sparkles with almost as many awards and accolades as its costumes have sequins. Take a trip back to the seminal music scene of the 1960s, when young women sang their way to musical prominence in a man’s world. Set in the Motown era that brought us powerhouse voices like Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross—and ultimately Destiny’s Child and Beyoncé—Dreamgirls explodes from the stage with legendary songs and timeless appeal.

SEEKING:

EFFIE (22 – 27)
African American. The original leader of the group, Effie is bold and uncompromising. She is a diva and she knows it. While this fierce attitude eventually leads her to being booted from the Dreams, she is a fighter and finds her way back. Effie is a voluptuous lady but refuses to let her size hold her back.

DEENA (22-27)
African American. Though on the quieter, shy side, Deena grows from a reserved small town girl to a huge international sensation. The ultimate success story, Deena finds her voice and her own identity. Based on Diana Ross, Patty Labelle and other leading ladies, Deena is focused and hungry and eventually becomes America’s Dreamgirl.

LORELL(22-27)
African American. The little sister of the group, Lorell becomes a woman over the course of the show. While she doesn’t aspire to Deena-level stardom, Lorell is a strong dynamic singer and proves she’s not one to be stepped on. Flirtatious, fun and a little wild, Lorell is destined to be a star.

JAMES THUNDER EARLY (30 – 35)
African American. Inspired by James Brown, Jackie Wilson, and Marvin Gaye, Jimmy Early is the King of Soul. Sexy and wild with a devil may care attitude, there is no holding Jimmy back and he climbs the charts. Eventually, however, his sound is no longer the sound of Rainbow Records and his popularity dwindles. Jimmy will do anything to get back to his fans and reclaim his throne.

CURTIS (30 – 35)
African American. Inspired by Berry Gordy, Curtis is the founder of Rainbow Records. A former used car dealer, Curtis is the visionary behind the success. His thirst for success and beautiful music can only be matched by his love for the amazing Deena Jones. Curtis becomes one of the must noted figures in music which ultimately leaves him alone.

CC (19 – 24)
African American. A genius musician and wordsmith, CC is the brains behind the beauty. His music leads Rainbow Records and the Dreams to ultimate success, but his search for the newest sound forces him to turn his back on everything he’s known. CC is well intentioned, idealistic and fiercely loyal to the vision of the Dreams.

SINGERS/DANCERS (18 – 30)
African American. Fierce Singer/Dancers to play a litany of roles from 1960’s Guy Groups to 70’s disco dancers.
