Floyd Barton: plays 35, blues singer/guitarist with big aspirations and big flaws, passionate, hopeful, knows how to do the right thing for a little while, but then that little while runs out. In love with his ambition and with Vera.
Hedley: plays 59, keeps, butchers, and sells chickens, suffers from tuberculosis and possible dementia, desirous and disturbed. No one really knows his story, but we know he’s been through a lot. Lives mentally in a past and future fantasy; lives physically with Louise. Needs Ruby.
Louise: plays 48, the matriarch, doesn’t rock the boat, but issues wise warnings, knows what it is to be used up and left, a realist, uninterested in love, fed up with life and death.
Vera: plays 27, faithful, described as a true woman in character and physicality, has been given the run-around by Floyd, but continues to fall for him.
Red Carter: Floyd’s friend and drummer, superstitious, simpler, steadier, from Alabama, likes to have a good time, but is in the middle of 7 years bad luck because he broke a mirror.
Ruby: plays 25, Louise’s niece, stubborn, young, and fatally attractive, won’t belong to anyone, but needs someone to take care of her unborn child.
Canewell: Floyd’s friend and harmonica player, tired of playing second fiddle to Floyd, edgy, wary, and dissatisfied, thinks he knows best, in love with Vera.

KING HEDLEY II: thirty-six years old, he is the spiritual son of King Hedley from Seven Guitars. He is engaged in life and death struggles with a scar to prove it. The slash down the left side of his face has left him with a glass eye. He looks like a bogeyman at the crossroads. He spent seven years in prison and strives to live by his own moral code.
RUBY: King’s mother and blues singer, sixty-one.
TONYA: King’s girlfriend who is pregnant and wants to have an abortion because she does not want to bring a baby into this corrupt, crazy world, thirty-five.
ELMORE: Sixty-six years old and an old hustler who has been carrying a torch for Ruby for more than 30 years. He exudes an air of elegance and confidence born of his many years wrestling with life. He knows the secret of King's true patrimony.
STOOL PIGEON: A sixty-five year old harmonica player also seen in Seven Guitars. He is now a newspaper-collecting history carrier.

DAPHNA FEYGENBAUM: 20s, female, Jewish. Liam & Jonah’s first cousin. 2/3 body, 1/3 hair. Daphna is very connected to her Jewish heritage. She is highly opinionated and easily lets her defensiveness turn into aggression towards her opponents. Subtlety is not in her nature.
LIAM HABER: 20s, male, Jewish. Daphna’s cousin. Attractive, put-together young professional on a trajectory for success. Former Fulbright scholar. Absolutely no sense of humor. Clearly lost his tolerance for Daphna a long time ago and isn’t discreet about the way he feels.
JONAH HABER: 20s, male, Jewish. Liam’s younger brother. Sometime-college sophomore. Just a regular guy. Less brainy. More heart. Sensitive. Doesn’t always speak up but when he does, it makes a strong impact. Caught in the middle.
MELODY: 20s, female, very clearly not Jewish. Liam’s girlfriend. Quite pretty and blonde. Dreams of being an opera singer but is unaware that she has a terrible voice. A peacemaker with a positive outlook on life.

Owen O’Malley baritone – Oscar’s press agent, sardonic, likes to drink
