Breakdown

WJ CLINTON – Baritone
(46 in real life at beginning of presidency)
President of the United States. The noble, heroic side of Bill Clinton. He is empathetic and wants to help transform America for a new century. He wants the public to remember him as a great President in the same vein as his hero JFK. He hates the “politics” of public service because he sees it as dirty, which is why he rejects Billy.

BILLY CLINTON – Baritone
(46 in real life at beginning of presidency)
President of the United States. The darker, seductive side of Bill Clinton. He is charming and funny and has an innate understanding of people, giving him a mastery of the politics of a situation, able to dazzle the public. He is not a policy wonk like WJ and lacks WJ’s moral compass.

HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON – Mezzo
(45 in real life at beginning of presidency)
First Lady of the United States. She is tough and is not intending to be a traditional first lady. She has her own agenda that she wants to achieve and wishes to be a co-president with her husband(s). She acts as the glue between the two Bills. She feels lost when the public rejects this arrangement and is devastated by the sexual exploits of Bill. Will need to double as Bill’s grandmother Edith.

NEWT GINGIRCH – Tenor
(49 in real life at beginning of presidency)
Republican Speaker of the House. Newt is a megalomaniac and Kenneth’s right hand man. Together with Kenneth, he plots to take down the Clintons. His background as the child of a military family makes him see politics as war. Will also need to double other roles such as the press.

MONICA LEWINKSY – Mezzo
(20 in real life at beginning of presidency)
Whitehouse Intern. Monica is peppy, flirtatious and a little naïve. Family connections get her a job at the Whitehouse where she falls head over heels for Billy and believes that he is in love with her too. When the Lewinsky scandal breaks she is left out in the cold, devastated by what has been done to her. Will need to double as the press and Bill Clinton’s mother VIRGINIA.

ELEANOR ROOSEVELT – Soprano
(was 78 when she died, was 41-60 while first lady)
Former First Lady of the United States. Eleanor is stately, strong and outspoken. She appears to impart wisdom to the audience which is continually misinterpreted by Hillary. Eleanor is strong like Hillary and visits her to convince her to stay with Bill after the affair in the same way that Eleanor stayed with FDR after her affairs. Will need to double as the press, PAULA JONES (Arkansas accent) and CALLISTA BISEK.

YOUNG WJ - Tenor
(looks 15)
Young WJ is the idealistic, younger version of WJ Clinton, appearing in flashbacks. He always sees Bill Clinton’s past in a happy romanticised way. He shares the same qualities as his older self. Will also need to double other roles such as the press.

YOUNG BILLY - Tenor
(looks 15)
Young Billy is the naughty, younger version of Billy Clinton, appearing in flashbacks. He always sees Bill Clinton’s past in a darker more realistic way. He shares the same qualities as his older self. Will also need to double other roles such as the press.
