Breakdown

SEEKING:

BESSIE BERGER: Female. 50s. Myron’s wife. The mother (and self-proclaimed father) of the house. Possesses great resourcefulness and energy. Naïve and quick in emotional response. Proper according to her own standards. Dominating, opinionated, and controlling. Only wants her children to be secure, but often at the cost of their happiness.

MYRON BERGER: Male. 50s. Bessie’s husband. A born follower who would like to be a leader. Heartbroken, but not aware of it. Generally disregarded by his family, particularly his wife. Rarely gets a word in edgewise.

HENNIE: Female. 26. Myron and Bessie’s daughter. Has had few friends. Self-reliant in the best sense. Bold sense of humor and energy. Stubborn and snarky and often keeps her feelings close to her chest. Likely knows what she wants, but doesn’t always act on it.

RALPH BERGER: Male. 22. Myron and Bessie’s son. A boy with a clean spirit. Strong desire to learn. Ardent, romantic, sensitive, and naïve. In love with an orphan girl, despite his mother’s protests. Seeks comfort from his grandfather Jacob.

UNCLE MORTY: Male. 40s-50s. Bessie’s brother. Successful American businessman. The lives of others seldom touch him deeply. Pleased by attention. Deeply intolerant and thinks mostly of himself.

JACOB: Male. 70s. Older, Jewish. Bessie and Morty’s father. A constant boarder in the Berger home. A sentimental idealist with no power to turn ideal into action. Has the flair of an artist when it comes to being a barber, but otherwise falters. Trying to find a right path for himself. An observer of others; reflective nature. Marxist. Often mocked by his family, but has a close relationship with grandson Ralph.

MOE AXELROD: Male. 30s- 40s. A friend of the Berger’s. Mordant, bitter, argumentative. Life has taught him a disbelief in everything. Lost a leg in the war; seldom forgets that fact. Rarely shows his feelings. Only wants to be with Hennie, but is sometimes too stubborn to admit this. Very proud.
