BREAKDOWN

Archduke is the astonishing new play from Pulitzer Prize finalist and Obie Award winner Rajiv Joseph, one of the most exciting playwrights of our time. Joseph (Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, Guards at the Taj) returns to the Taper with this World premiere, Center Theatre Group commission that poetically traces a group of young men along their unlikely path to terrorism at the onset of World War I. Belgrade, 1914. Three strangers, poor, alone, and adrift, each receive a death sentence in the form of a tuberculosis diagnosis. But being young men with nothing to lose makes them the perfect recruits for The Black Hand—a secret organization looking to strike a blow in the name of Serbian nationalism. Set against the backdrop of the 20th century beginning to discover its identity, and with Joseph’s signature dark humor, Archduke draws parallels to our own troubling times and asks: how (and when) does a century define itself?

FEMALE 50 years plus, *To understudy* SLADJANA - an all knowing housekeeper to Captain Dimitrijevic. A strict religious upbringing has become a habit, a ritual for her. She has seen it all and has survived--she may survive us all. Her relationship with Apis is complicated, we are not always sure who is the master and who is the servant. The actor should be skilled in physical comedy.

MALE 45 years plus, *To understudy* DRAGUTIN 'APIS' DIMITRIJEVIC - one time miliarty Captain with a terriorism plan. He is a braggart - at times absurd and at times terrifying. He is charming and disarming because the option to kill someone always exists for him. The actor must be masterful with language and very skilled with comedy; AND also *To understudy* DR LEKO - a medical doctor working to help suffers of 'consumption'.Reserved, yet compassionate, he believes in the worth of a human life. A sense of comic-timing necessary. Strong charistmatic older actor required to cover both these great roles.
