Preparation
Please EITHER:

1) 2 very brief contrasting monologues - contemporary or classical; OR

2) A contemporary Broadway song. Accompanist provided; OR

3) A one- minute monologue and 16 bars of a song.

Total audition time not to exceed 2 minutes.

Bring picture and resume.

black male, late 50’s to early 70’s; retired former NYC policeman. He is in rough shape after being wounded in the line of duty. Heavy drinker but sharp as a tack. (Cast)

Oswaldo
Latino male; mid 20’s to early 30’s; troubled former addict. He’s trying to get his life together by eating clean and staying away from any of the substances that derail him. He has been living in Pop’s house and looks on him as a father figure. Comic ability a must.

Lulu
Latina female; early 20’s to early 30’s; Junior’s current girlfriend. She says she is a college student, but there is no sign she actually is studying accounting. She lives with Junior and wants desperately to get married. Comic ability a must.

Junior
black male, Pop’s adult son; late 30’s to late 40’s. Laid back, unemployed drug dealer. He is an underachiever, to say the least. Not interested in making his relationship with Lulu permanent.

Detective O’Connor
female, 40’s, Irish American. Pop’s former partner on the force. She loves him like a member of her own family. (Cast)

Lt. Caro
male 40’s to 50’s; he is white and working class. He has played all the games within the force right and has made it through the ranks to Lt. Big, blow hard personality. A schmoozer with an agenda.
Fast talker and maybe Italian American. (Cast)

Church Lady
Latina or something exotic woman mid 30’s to mid 40’s. Attractive and mysterious. (Cast)

NOTE: Theatre intends to cast this show with San Francisco based actors.

These are two one act plays based on short stories from Lysley Tenorio’s book “MONTRESS”. Philip Kan Gotanda’s play is SAVING THE I-HOTEL and Sean San Jose’s is “PRESENTING THE MONTRESS”. There will be one cast who will be in both plays.

Reva/Singer
female, Filipino. REVA… Late 20’s to mid 30’s. A modest woman thrust into stardom (of a sort). A knowledge of Tagalog is helpful. Filipino accent. FILIPINO SINGER sings in the nightclub in I HOTEL.

Checkers/Vicente
male, Filipino. CHECKERS…Mid 30’s to early 40’s. A sweet, unassuming film maker. He truly believes he is ready for the bigtime. A knowledge of Tagalog is helpful. Filipino accent. VICENTE… he left cutting asparagus for a life in San Francisco. He is dapper and a sharp dresser. Fortunado helps him find a job at a hotel. He spends the rest of his life working there.

Gaz
male, caucasian. Could be 30 to 50. He sees himself as a mover and shaker film producer who will bring Checkers and his films to the mass market. He works out of his parent’s garage. Multiple parts in I HOTEL.

Mata/Fortunado
male, Filipino. 30’s to 40’s. The leader of the chorus who sets the scene and comments on what is happening to Checkers and Reva. A knowledge of Tagalog is helpful. Filipino accent. Fortunado…a hotel worker in San Francisco. Not as dapper as Vicente, but knows his way around San Francisco and knows how to get a good job. He is a caretaker. (Cast)

Dala
male, Filipino. 20’s to 40’s. He is part of a chorus that comments on what is happening to Checkers and Reva. A knowledge of Tagalog is helpful. Filipino accent. (Cast)

Tala
female, Filipino. 20’s to 40’s. She is part of a chorus that comments on what is happening to Checkers and Reva. A knowledge of Tagalog is helpful. Filipino accent. (Cast)

Rae
female, 20s – early 30s. High alto or low soprano. She is a singer at Joe’s bar. Strong willed and independent, but also capable of immense emotional vulnerability. Courageous in the face of insurmountable odds. Rae truly sees Joe and calls him out. Challenges him to see himself.

Madame
female, 30s or older. Alto with ability to belt. She is the boss of Joe’s bar. A head for business. She does what needs to be done. Usually that means keeping the party going and collecting the tabs. Sometimes the only way to keep the party going is to join in.

Roxy
female, 20s or 30s. Sassy. The life of the party. For every drink Madame charges for, Roxy pours two free ones. Employee of Joe’s Bar. Strong dancer.

Rook 1
male, 20s or 30s, high baritone or tenor. Mischievous and funny. One of Joe’s best friends who goes with him to war and is killed. He haunts Joe like a vaudevillian devil on his shoulder. Strong dancer.

Rook 2
male, 20s or 30s, baritone. A little dumb but funny. One of Joe’s best friends who goes with him to war and is killed. He haunts Joe like a vaudevillian devil on his shoulder. Strong dancer.

Koko
male 20s – 50s, tenor. A clown. Good hearted and loving. Best friend of Carl. Patron of Joe’s bar.

Handsome Carl
female passing as a male or could be played by a male, female would be an alto, male would be a baritone. 20s to 50s. He/She is a drunk. Cantankerous and a bit of a sad sack, but with a heart of gold. Patron of Joe’s bar.

Preacher
male 30s to 50s. Bass or low baritone. A preacher. Down on his luck and low on faith. Patron of Joe’s Bar.

Cathy Hiatt
mid 20’s to early 30’s. A not so successful actress from Ohio. She loves Jamie but can’t keep up with his success. She withdraws from their relationship over the course of five years. Big belt, mezzo.
