BREAKDOWN

Casting After I was Free, a work-in-progress presentation of part one of a new three-movement musical. After I Was Free is a modernized musical retelling of the story of Susanna and the Elders from the Book of Daniel (part of the biblical Apocrypha). This is a story that explores slut shaming, rape culture, and the exploitation of women's bodies in popular culture. After I Was Free will be presented as part of Dixon Place's Works-in-Progress series on the Mainstage. Production states: We are DEEPLY committed to diversity in casting and are seeking actors of all races and types for all roles in this play.

Due to the short rehearsal process, we are looking for experienced singers who are quick studies with strong sight reading ability. In your audition submissions, please note any dance experience and/or skill with harmonies.

Susanna: F, mid 20-30s. Soprano (up to E), folk sound. A young mother, beautiful and grounded, sexually attractive without intention, navigating her evolving relationship with her husband. She is stuck in two different realities: the past, in which she was confronted by blackmail and rape and chose to fight for her safety, and the present, in which she is forced to confront a marriage, a life, and a God that are not exactly what she believed them to be.

Joakim: M, mid 20-30s. Tenor. A young father, deeply in love with his wife, protective of his family. He doesn't have the information he needs to fully understand his wife's situation - he wants to help and support her, but doesn't know how. His uncertainty can make him angry, but he keeps trying..

Elder A: F or M, age open. Authoritative. Manipulative. Desirous. The Elder uses their position in life to get what they want, regardless of who is hurt in the process. Skill with harmonies helpful.

Elder B: F or M, age open. Authoritative. Manipulative. Desirous. The Elder uses their position in life to get what they want, regardless of who is hurt in the process. Skill with harmonies helpful.

Ensemble: 4 actors, M & F, age open, vocal range open. Townspeople, members of a small community - a web of gossip and judgment hangs over all of them. They are fully, painfully aware of Susanna's beauty. Maybe some of them would feel better if they could take her down a notch.
