Breakdown

SEEKING:

MRS. HELEN BAIRD
late 40s/early 50s, female. Warm, soulful and motherly, she radiates a kind of seen-it-all forbearance and authority. Helen has been through the wringer of life and it shows in her (once quite pretty) face. Underneath her mid-western stoicism and decorum, there's a melancholy, a sweet sadness that seems more focused on the troubled lives of others than on herself.

KENNY
very early 20s, male, strikingly handsome and sexy in a totally unself-conscious fashion. Kenny is indeed manly in appearance but underneath the young Warren Beatty-like exterior, there's a confused, angry, resentful teenager. Kenny definitely has an edge but he's not unintelligent or uneducated; in fact, he's restless, keyed up, and full of a repressed energy that has yet to find its proper outlet.

GEOFFREY ''JELLY'' BEAMIS
also early 20s, male, a comically goofy friend of Kenny's, tall, skinny, emotionally immature and still more a teenager than a young adult. Jelly is the 1930's version of a slacker with no real ambition or direction in his life aside from picking up girls and bumming cigarettes from his friend.

RONNY CAVENDISH
late 40s, an aging juvenile actor, effeminate and self-dramatizing with a slim, boyish physique and blond, peroxided hair. There is something (almost freakishly) sexless as well as ageless about Ronny; on stage, he could probably play a sixteen year old girl. But he has a very adult sense of humor - cynical and biting - with an undercurrent of lasciviousness.

MME. OLGA ST. VALENTINE
mid-60s, female, a highly affected and self-consciously grand actor of the old school. Her speech and mannerisms are too precise, too theatrical, even a bit pathetic and ridiculous for the real world. Underneath the performance, however, she is actually a desperate and frightened older woman, playing for time.

RICKY POWERS
early 40s, a slickly handsome, powerfully built actor with a good deal of sexual magnetism. At first glance, Ricky appears as a conventional leading man; closer inspection reveals more sinister qualities. There is something hard and menacing about Ricky, even a little sleazy; at one time he may have been a decent enough fellow; circumstances have made him cruel and pitiless, especially with women.

MRS. MULVANEY
early 30s, the idealization of young motherhood, pretty and well-spoken, the very image of mid-western decency and graciousness.

SANDRA
about eight years old, an ideally beautiful and charming little girl

LILA GREEN
Role has been CAST. Actors will be considered for possible replacements if necessary.
Very beautiful in a girlish sort of way. Although in her late 30s, there is something innocent, unformed and deeply vulnerable about Lila. An actor by trade, she is impulsive, high-strung, even a shade neurotic; her emotions are all on the surface. However, the natural sweetness of her disposition has been tempered by hard experience, making her skittish and more guarded around people than she would like to be. Clearly, she has been badly used. THIS ROLE IS CAST.
