Outcry Youth Theatre presents LORD OF THE FLIES

Outcry Youth Theatre brings William Golding's classic novel, LORD OF THE FLIES, to bloody, vivid life in this stage adaptation by Nigel Williams. The familiar tale of British private school boys stranded on a remote island will be delivered with an exciting and emotional fervor.

Outcry Youth Theatre's talented actors, who hail from all parts of the Dallas/Fort Worth area, are perfectly suited to the challenges of a show of this intensity. Director Becca Johnson-Spinos does not hold back, and this show will immerse audiences in an unrestrained place where school boys devolve into feral savages or face death to fight for their humanity. As the boys face off against their own primal nature, expect to be unsettled by their loss of civility, shocked by their brutality, and heartbroken by their betrayals. Johnson-Spinos has created the same powerful battles between the boys and within themselves one would expect from a professional adult production, but with even more believability as the actors are all between the ages of 12 and 18.

The production had such a large turnout at auditions, that Johnson-Spinos ended up creating four distinct casts - two are all boys and two are all girls. "I was not surprised at the interest," Johnson-Spinos remarked. "I have worked with many of these kids for years and their work has been building to be able to perform in a show this exciting, visceral, and real. I was thrilled that we could have four casts with the talent required to do this epic story justice."

While casting girls in boy roles is commonplace at Outcry Youth Theatre, Johnson-Spinos was insistent that the casts for LORD OF THE FLIES should be entirely boys or entirely girls. "By casting all one gender in each cast, we can more sharply focus on the individuals and their dynamics as a group. Relationships aren't colored by gender perceptions and conflicts don't become a battle of the sexes."

With four casts, there is a large variance in the performances. Even Johnson-Spinos was surprised at some of what she observed working with the four different casts. "They have the same script and direction and yet the performances are distinctly different from one another. I think audiences will find their perception of the character changes based on the actor. If you come see a different cast, you will be seeing an entirely different show."

More about Outcry Youth Theatre: "This is not children's theatre. This is theatre." Outcry Youth Theatre's motto describes how they approach each of their productions. The goal is not for the plays to be good "for kids," but for them to be as good as any adult production. Outcry Youth Theatre opened its first show, Love/Sick, in July of 2016. In the year since that first show, youth actors from McKinney to Ft. Worth have performed in Eurydice, A Wrinkle in Time, A Year with Frog and Toad, Peter and the Starcatcher, a new adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, Radium Girls, and Seussical. A Wrinkle in Time was recognized with the 2016 Broadway World Dallas Best Youth Play Award.

More about Becca Johnson-Spinos, Director: The Artistic Director of Outcry Theatre, Johnson-Spinos received her MFA in Directing for Theatre from Baylor University, which culminated with her thesis production of The Seagull. At Baylor, in addition to directing numerous workshop productions, she also directed Brilliant Traces and assistant directed Blood WeddinG. Johnson-Spinos earned her BFA in Music Theatre from Elon University, and attended Playwrights Horizons Directing Lab and Shakespeare's Globe and Washington University's Shakespeare Intensive. She wrote, directed, and performed a one-woman show for The New York Fringe Festival. Additionally, Johnson-Spinos worked as an assistant to the Artistic Director at Burning Coal Theatre Company in North Carolina, where she also assistant directed and performed. In the Dallas area, she previously served as a director at Plano Children's Theatre (directing over 25 productions), as well as their daytime show manager. Johnson-Spinos and her husband, Jason, a filmmaker, theatre-artist and teacher, founded Outcry Theatre in 2012 with the mission to draw young adults to theatre. Outcry Youth is a new expansion of Outcry Theatre in which Johnson-Spinos has created the perfect vehicle to meld her extensive children's theatre experience with the artistic vision of Outcry creating a unique theatre offering for DFW audiences and youth participants.
