When I reviewed NEWSIES last week, I unapologetically admitted that I fit into the Fansie (fan+Newsies=Fansie) category. By then, I'd seen the show onstage 4 times, and the movie more times than I could ever attempt to count. Immediately following the show, I learned that actor Dan Deluca, the leader of the ragamuffin newsboy gang, was taking vacation during the second week of Dallas performances. Having seen both actors who played the role on Broadway, as well as Mr. Deluca, I decided to seized the opportunity to catch an understudy take a stab at the lead role.

Last night, I returned to the beautiful Winspear Opera House ready to write a new headline, but unsure of what to expect. After the show's brief overture, the curtain rose on Michael Ryan, marking only his second performance as Newsie leader, Jack Kelly. Immediately, I noticed Mr. Ryan's impressive control of his alluring tenor voice, not to mention his natural stage presence. With equal parts swagger and charm, he had perfect chemistry with his cast mates, whose energy flourished as they supported the young actor stepping into such a demanding role. When Mr. Ryan eventually took his curtain call, he received an enormous ovation not only from the packed theatre, but from his peers onstage also.

By sheer luck, or perhaps some "Disney Magic," I was seated directly in front of Mr. Ryan's charming parents, who had flown in from Boston to see him in the role. Seeing and hearing their reactions to watching their talented son onstage made for an unforgettable night in the theatre. As they proudly pointed out their son to nearby audience members, the audience unanimously celebrated his impeccable performance.

If you've ever felt disappointed or nervous when you open your program to find an understudy slip, rest assured that the cast of Newsies is well prepared, and always ready to impress. Michael Ryan performs again tonight, Thursday May 7th, as Jack Kelly, with Jon Hacker undertaking the role until Dan Deluca returns. Newsies continues at Winspear Opera House through next Sunday, May 10th. Tickets are available online at www.attpac.org.
