PRESS RELEASEThe Arts at Angelorias presents"City of Angels"- A Jazz MusicalMay 31, June 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 2019City of Angels swept both the Tony Awards and the Drama Desk Awards in 1990 with Best Musical, Best Score, Best Set Design among other awards. In 1994 the London production won Best Musical and in 2015 this show won Best Revival and now you can experience CITY OF ANGELS right here in Connecticut at The Arts at Angelorias in Southington! CITY OF ANGELS captures the gritty sights and sounds of Hollywoods classic detective movies, all set to a brilliant, bluesy jazz score. In the late 1940s, Stine, a bookish writer of detective stories, struggles to adapt his crime novel into a workable screenplay. As Stine tries to maintain some integrity in the backstabbing world of Hollywood, his protagonist, a hard-boiled private eye named Stone, fights for survival in a city full of criminals and opportunists. In a brilliant design choice, the stories are told on a split stage: Stines world is in full color, while Stones appears in black and white. This double feature quality leads to many other unique production values, the most notable being the fact that CITY OF ANGELS is perhaps the only color coded show any theatre audience is likely to see. The movie scenes appear in shades of black and white, and the real life scenes are in technicolor. With wit, humor, and a fantastic Cy Coleman score, CITY OF ANGELS captures the snappy dialogue of a Raymond Chandler novel and the glitzy showmanship of classic Hollywood; the result is a crowd-pleasing musical unlike any other. The show boasts two musical scores, actually. One provides the cast with numbers to help reveal certain emotions or to celebrate particular moments in the way that only music can. The other score was written to emulate pure movie soundtrack music, 1940s vintage. It is entirely appropriate, then, that the final curtain comes down on two happy endings. This production is directed by Kate Luurtsema and produced by Lori Holm with Music Direction by Alan Doughtery and choreography by Lyn Colombatto. It stars Sara Fabrizio, Rick Fountain, Amanda Gross, Ed Hobson, Lori Holm, Sophia Lily, Kaity Marzik, Ashley McLeod, Amelia Nemeth, Christine Mitchell, Katherine Loy, Elizabeth Reynolds, Ed Rosenblatt, Steffon Sampson, and Robert Saunders. The Arts at Angeloria's venue (circa 1908) will host this production in its unique Art Barn- reminiscent of the Gene Kelley/Judy Garland "Summerstock" setting. Guests will enjoy visiting the period-decorated Main House for concessions and facilities and strolling the grounds for some early summer fresh air pre-show and at intermission. Dont miss your chance to see this rarely done musical! Performances are scheduled for May 31,June 1,2,7,8,9, 2019.("City of Angels" is presented by special arrangement with Tams-Witmark Music Library, Inc., 560 Lexington Avenue, New York, New York.)

BWW Review: CITY OF ANGELS at THE ARTS AT ANGELORIA'S
June 02, 2019 It never ceases to amaze me how prolific and creative the theatrical community is here in Connecticut. With 80 + theatrical companies (at my last count) in the state, you don't have to go far to take in some amazing theatre. From professional, equity houses to community theatres, the variety, and unique offerings from each company is truly amazing. And speaking of unique offerings, I had the pleasure of attending my first performance at The Arts at Angeloria's in Southington for their production of Larry Gelbart, Cy Coleman, and David Zippel's musical CITY OF ANGELS, which also served as the premiere production in their new 100-seat "Art Barn." For those familiar with the musical, you will know that this is not an easy show to mount, especially in a smaller theatrical space. But for the company who performed THE WHO'S TOMMY in their small 50-seat black box space, if anyone was up to it, they were. As for CITY OF ANGELS? It is a valiant attempt with some high points that mostly overshadow any challenges that come from the limitations of the space.
