"We Are Shelter House," a new documentary video about Johnson County's only general-use homeless shelter, will be the centerpiece of community-wide event to be held on Wednesday, October 10, from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at The Englert Theatre.

The 20-minute documentary, produced by City Channel 4, Iowa City's Cable TV Division, includes interviews with Shelter House clients, staff and supporters, as well as information about Shelter House services and transitional resources.

According to Shelter House Executive Director Crissy Canganelli, the Englert event-titled "Question Your Assumptions"-not only will showcase the new documentary, but provide an opportunity to discuss and dispel some common misperceptions about the homeless.

"We want this event to be a wide-ranging conversation about homelessness in our community," Canganelli says. "I think people are going to be surprised by what they learn about the individuals and families that utilize our services, and the valuable role Shelter House has played in helping people get back on their feet. We encourage everyone who's interested in this important issue to attend and be part of the conversation."

In addition to the film premiere, "Question Your Assumptions" will feature a musical performance by Dave Moore, readings and remarks by Shelter House clients and staff, and an extended Q&A period. The one-hour event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored in part by The Englert Theatre.
