Americas Society will hold the screening of REDES, a film co-written and shot by Paul Strand with a score by Silvestre Revueltas on Thursday, May 4, 7:00 p.m. Perspectives Ensemble (Sato Moughalian, Artistic Director), conducted by Angel Gil-Ordóñez, will begin the evening with live performances of Revueltas' Ocho por Radio (1933) and "Duelo" from Homenaje a Federico García Lorca (1936). A panel discussion, featuring PostClassical Ensemble Executive Director Joseph Horowitz, Gil-Ordóñez, moderated by Carlos Gutierrez (Cinema Tropical), will be held prior to the screening. This event is the New York premiere of the newly restored version of the film.

About the film: An iconic product of the Mexican Revolution, Redes (1935) combines the talents of a master composer, Silvestre Revueltas, and a master cinematographer, Paul Strand. The film was co-directed by future Oscar winner Fred Zinnemann and Emilio Go?mez Muriel. In this vivid, documentary-like dramatization of the daily grind of men struggling to make a living by fishing on the Gulf of Mexico (played on screen by real-life fishermen), one worker's terrible loss instigates a political awakening among him and his fellow laborers.

PostClassical Ensemble, led by Angel Gil-Ordóñez, recently recorded the soundtrack for the release of the restored version of the film for Naxos. The present DVD is the world premiere recording of Revueltas's full score, one of the highest achievements in the history of film music. Read more about the film restoration.

This program is organized in collaboration with Naxos and Cinema Tropical.
