HBO Orders Comedy Pilot from GIRLS Writer

HBO has officially picked up a comedy pilot from GIRLS scribe Bruce Eric Kaplan, the network announced today.

The project, PEOPLE IN NEW JERSEY, follows two siblings living just south of New York, who desperately attempt to get through life on a day-by-day basis. SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE's Lorne Michaels will produce alongside acclaimed director Jason Reitman and Kaplan.

As of now, no cast is attached to the pilot.

Aside from serving as a writer for GIRLS, Kaplan writes a series of dark comics that are published in The New Yorker.

GIRLS, created by and starring Lena Dunham will return for Second Season on Jan. 13, Exclusively on HBO. Guest stars this season will include Andrew Rannells, Donald Glover, Chris O'Dowd, Rita Wilson, Jorma Taccone, Rosanna Arquette, Carol Kane and Patrick Wilson.

Earlier this year, GIRLS won an Emmy(R) for Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series. The series also received Emmy(R) nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (Lena Dunham), Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series (Lena Dunham) and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series (Lena Dunham).

In addition, the show was just nominated for Writers Guild of America awards in the New Series and Comedy Series categories (Judd Apatow, Lesley Arfin, Lena Dunham, Sarah Heyward, Bruce Eric Kaplan, Jenni Konner, Deborah Schoeneman and Dan Sterling).

The first season of GIRLS was called "smart, funny" and "groundbreaking" by the San Francisco Chronicle, while New York Magazine hailed it as "the ballsiest show on TV." People described the show as "brilliant," and TV Guide said it was "brilliantly raw" and a "true breakthrough."
