GLEE's Lea Michele Urges NY Governor to Protect Puppy Mill Dogs

Golden Globe and Emmy nominee, Lea Michele, has joined forces with The Humane Society of the United States to urge Gov. Andrew Cuomo to sign a bill that will give local governments the ability to regulate New York puppy mills.

Michele's letter to the Governor stated: "As a lifelong New Yorker and a recent dog owner, I couldn't be more delighted that our great, progressive state has considered large-scale commercial puppy mills - breeding factories where female dogs are constantly impregnated and forced to live in cages in their own excrement - an unnecessary cruelty that deserves local oversight."

Michele, The HSUS and other animal welfare organizations throughout the state are encouraging Gov. Cuomo to sign bill A.740a / S.3753a, which gives New York communities the opportunity to implement minimal standards at commercial dog breeding facilities.

Brian Shapiro, New York state director for The HSUS, said: "The bill would grant local governments the ability to regulate puppy mills and declare these conditions illegal. We urge all New Yorkers to call Governor Cuomo and ask him to sign this bill into law to better protect animals living in New York State."
