Hailed as "inspiring" by the Los Angeles Times, Crystal R. Emery's groundbreaking documentary, BLACK WOMEN IN MEDICINE returns to New York on the heels of its special screening slated for Academy members in Los Angeles, hosted by the California Endowment and featuring Danny Glover and Bill Duke. Capturing the tenacious women who have succeeded against all odds in the male-dominated medical field, "Black Women in Medicine" will run at Roy Arias Theatre from November 13 through 22.

Former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Joycelyn Elders stressed the importance of young women and people of color being exposed to role models in the medical field, saying, "You can't be what you can't see." Emery's film, the first documentary of its kind, highlights trailblazing Black doctors and the next generation of physicians, providing young people with the motivation to set big goals for themselves. The filmmaker recently launched a national campaign, the "Changing the Face of Medicine Initiative" to help increase the percentage of Black doctors in the United States from 4.5 percent in 2016 to 7 percent by 2030.

More broadly the film is a part of Emery's life's work to urge American audiences to challenge their own limitations. The director, whose writing has appeared in Time Magazine, has triumphed over two chronic diseases as a quadriplegic, to write, direct and produce the film.

After its theatrical roll out in New York and Los Angeles this past August, the film has met all the qualifications to be considered for an Academy Award nomination. "Black Women in Medicine" is currently airing (edited version for TV) across the country on public television.

Synopsis:"Black Women in Medicine" is the first documentary to explore the history, contemporary issues, and future possibilities of African American women physicians by featuring the diverse voices of young medical students, practicing physicians, and elder trailblazers all of whom share intimate stories of what it means to be a Black Woman Doctor in America. This groundbreaking film includes rarely seen documentation of Black women practicing medicine during critical operations, emergency room urgent care, and community wellness sessions as well as in depth original interviews and compelling archival images. In telling the stories of women who have persevered in medicAl Fields in part by overcoming barriers linked to race and gender, "Black Women in Medicine" provides audiences with a vivid and stunning experience of the triumph of the human spirit.
