NBC News chief anchor Brian Williams, following his suspension, has resigned from the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation Board of Directors, according to a notice on the organization's website.

Williams had been a part of the board since September 2006. The organization did not explain the journalist's departure.

Williams has been suspended from NBC News for six months without pay following the disclosure that he had exaggerated a story from an Iraq War mission that he was covering in 2003.

The Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation was founded by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, which consists exclusively of the living Medal of Honor recipients. The organization raises awareness in the American public about the Medal of Honor and what it represents by promoting the values of courage, sacrifice, selfless service and patriotism through outreach, education, and example. It also raises funds for various Medal of Honor programs.
