Two full hours of THE FOLLOWING tonight and it was exhausting. I'm not sure at what point Joe Carroll started looking like the most reasonable of the villains, but yet, here we are. Yes, at long last, his return was upon us, even if we're not quite sure why.

Our favorite psycho couple is at it again on killing sprees. This time it's on a college campus with couple, Reggie and Marisol. We're not quite sure why at first, until Ryan discovers that Marisol is the daughter of the Judge presiding over the Strauss trial. Yup, Julianna is a paralegal on the defense team and Daisy and Kyle are Dr. Strauss' former students. Turns out they were all using Mark as a distraction because if the FBI thought Mark was behind it, they wouldn't realize what they were really doing. But things don't really go as planned, Ryan and Mike catch up to the couple and are able to save Marisol and wind up shooting Kyle in the process. He vows to power through since it's only "one more day." They wind up successfully capturing the prosecution's key witness, Carrie Cook, and burn her to a crisp. Right when they think they're free, Ryan catches up with them. Daisy is able to escape, but Kyle is killed. They're too late though, the Judge has dismissed the case and Dr. Strauss has walked.

Daisy and Kyle's brutal slaughter on a firehouse turns out to be calculated as it was the firehouse Max's father (Ryan's brother) was in before he died on 9/11. Max is torn up and turns to Mike for dead father sympathy and she winds up sleeping with him. When the FBI raids Mark's brownstone, it is Tom (Max's boyfriend) who finds their surveillance computer and he keeps it for himself. After he sees Max and Mike's indiscretion, he uses it to keep an eye on her. (Come on, Tom, you're better than this!)

Mark is very suspicious he is being used. When he follows Daisy and Kyle, it leads him to Julianna. He finds out she is working for Dr. Strauss and captures her after the trial. Once she tells him where Dr. Strauss is, he kills her.

Daisy catches up with Dr. Strauss and tells him Kyle is dead and she attacks him. He calms her down and offers to take her with him to a new life. Ryan, Max and Mike arrive on the scene, but before they can arrest them, Mark begins gunfire. Ryan takes off after Mark while Max and Mike take off after the Dr. They catch Strauss and handcuff him and Mike leaves Max to handle him. In doing so, Max is brutally attacked by Daisy and she and the Dr. escape leaving Max for dead. Mike finally catches Mark and is ready to execute him when Ryan stops him. Mark jumps off the boat into the water, his status unknown. They are both called to the hospital. Ryan is pissed at Mike for leaving Max alone and Mike is pissed at Ryan for letting Mark get away. Max is going to recover and Gwen arrives to talk Ryan out of drinking and let him know she will always try and save him.

And then, it's the moment we've been waiting for over the last five episodes. Ryan makes a decision and he arrives at the prison... to see JOE! Joe slyly greets him with, "What took you so long?" A great question, Ryan. What DID take you this long?

Gwen is just about the best girlfriend Ryan has ever had. She is so perfect for him that I fear for her safety. If he loses her, there is no coming back. Clearly, we will be moving into a new storyline now with Dr. Strauss on the run with his band of followers. I'm kind of glad to be done with Daisy and Kyle. Their antics were getting a little old. (Although I will miss Hunter Parrish... he's dreamy. Also, saw him in HAIR this summer, quite a singer!) I wonder if Daisy will become a little more interesting on her own. I'm assuming we haven't seen the last of her? And I'm guessing Mark is still out there. That was way too anti-climactic of a death for him.

So where will Joe Carroll fit into all this? At this point, is he Ryan's ally or will it just be more mind games? I'm guessing a little from column A, a little from column B.

And I wonder where this leaves Max and Mike. It's clear Mike is madly in love with her, even Ryan knows that, but what about poor Tom? He's being pushed a little over the edge by this indiscretion. Is it me or did he hesitate for a second before helping to save Mike's life when he was hanging off the roof? And now HE'S using the surveillance equipment? Not cool, Tom. At this point, I think Mendez has had about enough with these rogue agents. It was admirable (I guess?) to give them the night to find the bad guys, but technically, now they're all suspended, right? I wonder how long that will last.
