'A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE' Cast & Creatives Set for 92Y Event, 5/11

92Y presents an evening with the cast and creative team behind the best-reviewed show of the season, A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder. Robert L. Freedman (book/lyrics) and Steven Lutvak (music/lyrics) discuss the production's ten-year journey to Broadway, with performances from cast members Jefferson Mays, Bryce Pinkham, Lisa O'Hare, and Lauren Worsham on Sunday, May 11 at 8 pm. The original cast album is released today on Ghostlight Records.

A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder slashed its way to Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre on the heels of its critically acclaimed, smash-hit runs at Hartford Stage and San Diego's Old Globe Theatre. When Monty Navarro, a disinherited relative of the rich and powerful D'Ysquith clan, learns he's ninth in line to inherit the earldom, he sets out to secure his future by, er, process of elimination. Each of the eight heirs perilously standing in the way of Monty's fortune are played by Tony Award-winner Jefferson Mays, in one of the most tireless, whiplash-inducing performances ever attempted on the American stage. Set in England's elegant Edwardian era, this uproarious new musical comedy shows just how low we'll go to make it to the top. The production opened to rave reviews on Sunday, November 17, and celebrated a landmark 1,000th death of its leading man in March 5, with an honorary "death certificate" presentation to Jefferson Mays.

Robert L. Freedman (Book/Lyrics) received the Fred Ebb and Kleban awards for the musicals A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder and Campaign of the Century with Steven Lutvak, and was nominated for Emmy and Writers Guild awards for the television miniseries Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows. Other teleplays include Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella (WGA nomination), HBO's A Deadly Secret (WGA winner), What Makes a Family (GLAAD Award, Humanitas finalist), Murder in the Hamptons, The Pastor's Wife, Honor Thy Mother, What Love Sees, Bitter Blood, and Broadway Sings the Music of Jule Styne (PBS). Stage works include The Beast of Broadway: The Life and Times of David Merrick, written with Faye Greenberg, and the musical Grand Duchy, with composer John Bayless.

Steven Lutvak (Music/Lyrics) makes his Broadway debut with A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder. Steven wrote the title track to Paramount's hit film, Mad Hot Ballroom, and won the Kleban and Fred Ebb Awards, both with Robert L. Freedman, for A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder and Campaign of the Century. Other musicals include Almost September, Esmeralda, The Wayside Inn and other awards include two Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation Grants, the Johnny Mercer Emerging American Songwriting Award, and an NEA New American Work Grant. Steven was profiled in Time magazine's "People to Watch" and has performed his songs at Carnegie Hall and around the country. He has recorded two CD's - The Time It Takes and Ahead of my Heart - and his songs are discussed in the David Jenness and Don Velsey book Classic American Popular Song.
