After last fall's successful debut of O Brazil, a series of contemporary Brazilian films that represent the nation's thriving film scene, Museum of the Moving Image announces the series' second installment with a selection of three new films centered around music.

This spring, O Brazil will include After the Rain, Claudio Marques and Marilia Hughes's coming-of-age film set in 1984, at the moment when Brazil faces its first democratic presidential election (May 8); She Comes Back on Thursday, André Novais Oliveira's moving portrait of his own family as his aging parents contemplate separation (May 22); and Brazilian Western, Rene Sampaio's thrilling love-crime drama inspired by the Brazilian folk rock song of the same name (June 19).

Advance tickets for all films are available online at movingimage.us/brazil. See below for full schedule and descriptions.

The series is organized by guest curator Marcela Goglio, who said: "While the films in this new season of O Brazil share a focus on music, it's not the kind of music you would expect from Brazil. Whether as a source of inspiration for the story, such as the music by Legiao Urbana in Brazilian Western; or a part of the everyday soundtrack in a film about everyday life, as in She Comes Back on Thursday; or as a vehicle for profound change, such as the Brazilian punk in After the Rain; music is ever-present and profoundly bound to narrative in these films."

SCHEDULE FOR 'O BRAZIL: CONTEMPORARY BRAZILIAN CINEMA' (SPRING 2015):
Screenings will take place in the Sumner M. Redstone Theater or the Celeste and Armand Bartos Screening Room at Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35 Avenue in Astoria. Tickets are $12 adults / $9 seniors and students / $6 children 3-12 /free for Museum members at the Film Lover level and above. Advance tickets are available online at movingimage.us.

After the Rain (Depois da chuva)
FRIDAY, MAY 8, 7:00 P.M.
Dirs. Claudio Marques, Marilia Hughes. 2014, 95 mins. Digital projection. In Portuguese with English subtitles. With Pedro Maia, Sophia Corral, Talis Castro, Paula Carneiro, Victor Corujeira. It is 1984 and the city of Salvador de Bahia prepares for Brazil's first presidential elections after 20 years of dictatorship. As his school prepares for its own first council elections, sixteen-year-old Caio's political awakening begins, as he shifts from a critical outsider to a vocal participant. Focusing on a period seldom portrayed in Brazilian cinema, Hughes and Marques's semi-autobiographical debut highlights questions about the possibility of political and social change. Their sensitive portrayal of characters and raw performances by non-professional actors infuse the film with a rebellious energy that perfectly captures this effervescent moment of endless possibility. The award-winning original soundtrack, performed live in the film, blends imported punk with traditional local instruments, setting the perfect tone for Caio's bold lunge forward into Brazil's uncertain future.

She Comes Back on Thursday (Ela volta na quinta)
FRIDAY, MAY 22, 7:00 P.M.
Dir. André Novais Oliveira. 2014, 108 mins. DCP. In Portuguese with English subtitles. With Maria José Novais Oliveira, Norberto Novais Oliveira, André Novais Oliveira, Renato Novais Oliveira. This moving and revelatory portrayal of a family of color is unusual in the history of Brazilian cinema. Novais Oliveira asked his brother and aging parents to play themselves as he plumbed the microcosms of their day-to-day lives, trying to shed light on the imperceptible shift in order that caused his parents to separate after 35 years of marriage. His love for his characters and eye for observation are palpable, as well as his formal and dramatic approach: generous long sequences that allow fictional situations to unfold naturally, and wide frames that allow space for everyday moments to take root.

Brazilian Western (Faroeste Caboclo)
FRIDAY, JUNE 19, 7:00 P.M.
Dir. Rene Sampaio. 2014, 105 mins. Digital projection. In Portuguese with English subtitles. With Fabricio Boliveira, Isis Valverde, Felipe Abib. This slick love-crime drama set in Brasilia at the end of the 1980s chronicles the epic saga of Joao De Santo Cristo (John of Holy Christ), an outlaw made legendary by iconic composer/singer Renato Russo's famous song (released by his Legiao Urbana band in 1988). Seamlessly melding the western genre with Brazilian folk storytelling, Sampaio fully succeeds in keeping authentic class and race struggles alive within the framework of a passionately romantic and entertaining genre piece.
