Josh Brolin has officially boarded Paul Thomas Anderson's adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's INHERENT VICE, according to Deadline.

Brolin joins Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Martin Short Owen Wilson, and Jena Malone for the film. Sean Penn is also reportedly considering a role.

INHERENT VICE is officially described as:
"Part noir, part psychedelic romp, all Thomas Pynchon- private eye Doc Sportello surfaces, occasionally, out of a marijuana haze to watch the end of an era...

It's been a while since Doc Sportello has seen his ex- girlfriend. Suddenly she shows up with a story about a plot to kidnap a billionaire land developer whom she just happens to be in love with. It's the tail end of the psychedelic sixties in L.A., and Doc knows that "love" is another of those words going around at the moment, like "trip" or "groovy," except that this one usually leads to trouble. Undeniably one of the most influential writers at work today, Pynchon has penned another unforgettable book."

In 2008, Brolin was nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of Dan White in Gus Van Sant's acclaimed film Milk. Recently, he starred in the Coen Brothers' True Grit, which was nominated for 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture; Oliver Stone's Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps; and Woody Allen's You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger. He received rave reviews for his portrayal of George W. Bush in Oliver Stone's biopic, W. Prior to that, Brolin earned a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of an ensemble for his work in Joel and Ethan Coen's No Country for Old Men, which also won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Additionally, Brolin starred in Ridley Scott's blockbuster American Gangster and was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of this ensemble.

Anderson has helmed such films as Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, Hard Eight and Punch-Drunk Love.
