CAPA Summer Movie Series Opens June 15

The 42nd annual CAPA Summer Movie Series at the historic Ohio Theatre (39 E. State St.) begins June 15, and features 27 films over nine weeks. The Series opens with the Oscar-winning, American classic, Casablanca, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, which runs June 15-17.

Casablanca is also one of seven films on the 2012 Series which will be audio described by Accessible Arts of Central Ohio. Audio description allows visually impaired theatre-goers to hear a scene-by-scene narration of the on-screen action while they listen to movie dialogue at no extra charge. Headsets can be picked up in the lobby before the audio-described showings. To reserve equipment, contact Elizabeth Lamont at (614) 469-1045.

Casablanca (1942)
Sunday, June 17, 2 pm
“Here’s looking at you, kid.” Winner of three Oscars including Best Picture, Casablanca topped the American Film Institute’s list of America’s Greatest Love Stories. Bogart and Bergman sizzle as star-crossed lovers fighting an ill-fated and powerful attraction while caught in a web of WWII politics, espionage, and deceit.

Goldfinger (1964)
Thursday, June 21, 7:30 pm
Ft. Knox and the world’s supply of gold are threatened by evil mastermind Auric Goldfinger and his “Operation Grand Slam.” It’s up to special agent James Bond to navigate Goldfinger’s odd assortment of hench”men” and save the world’s economy from destruction.

Laura (1944)

Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, Clifton Webb, Vincent Price
In this Oscar-winning film noir, detective McPherson (Andrews) finds himself falling for Laura Hunt (Tierney), the murder victim whose case he is investigating. The plot twists and turns will keep you guessing as the truth is unraveled in this murder mystery gem, ranked the fourth best film in the mystery genre by the American Film Institute.

High Anxiety (1977)

In this parody based on the films of Alfred Hitchcock, comedy mastermind Mel Brooks directs, produces, and stars as Dr. Richard Thorndyke, new administrator of the Psychoneurotic Institute for the Very, VERY Nervous. With a supporting cast of characters expertly crafted by comedic royalty, Brooks must confront his own "high anxiety" psychiatric condition to clear his name when framed for murder.

The French Connection (1971)

Based on the 1969 non-fiction book of the same name, this gritty police drama portrays two tough New York City narcotics detectives plotting to intercept a large shipment of heroin from France. Often considered to contain one of the greatest car chases in movie history, this five-time Oscar winner was the first R-rated film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)

Directed by Steven Spielberg, this Oscar-winning action adventure is the prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark and finds professor, archaeologist, and legendary hero Indiana Jones (Ford) searching for a mystical stone stolen from an Indian village frantic for its return. Of course, he stumbles into more than anticipated, and must save the day, win the girl, and dismantle the evil cult operating the Temple of Doom.

Dinner at Eight (1933)

“I'm going to be a lady if it kills me.” A social ladder-climbing couple throws a dinner party for a group of New York socialites that erupts into a hotbed of scandal and intrigue. One of the biggest all-star comedies of the ‘30s, this mix of romance, tragedy, and wisecrack-filled screwball slapstick offers priceless quips from Harlow and Dressler.

Describers receive detailed training through Ohio State University’s Lawrence and Lee Theatre Research Institute, the nation’s only statewide audio description service. The institute’s director, Alan Woods, is a national leader in establishing and raising standards for describers nationwide. Audio description is also provided in association with Accessible Arts of Central Ohio, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing audio description for cultural arts events.
