Howard County Arts Council Celebrates National Arts & Humanities Month

The Howard County Arts Council (HCAC) is joining Americans for the Arts and arts agencies across the nation in encouraging people to celebrate National Arts and Humanities Month (NAHM) by supporting the arts in our community during the month of October.

HCAC will participate in NAHM with the opening of Art Maryland 2016, a biennial juried exhibit showcasing regional artists which will be on display from October 28 through December 9. Christopher Bedford, Director of the Baltimore Museum of Art, is the juror for the exhibit. Gallery hours are Monday - Friday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday noon to 4 p.m.

Other Howard County arts events taking place in October include:

October 1: Candlelight Concert Society presents Zodiac Trio & 'New Year Reception. A trio of 'truly exceptional and sublime talent' (Nice-Matin, France) explores sentimentality through music. 8pm; reception 10pm. $34 (performance); $12 (reception). October 8: Columbia Orchestra presents Beethoven and Saint-Saëns. The Orchestra's 39th season opens with Beethoven: Violin Concerto, featuring Joel Fuller, violin; Adam Schoenberg: Up; and Saint- Saëns: Symphony No. 3, "Organ". 7:30pm. $10-$27. Jim Rouse Theatre, Columbia. columbiaorchestra.org
October 22: Columbia Pro Cantare presents its 40th Anniversary Gala. Joined by Howard County Concert Orchestra and Susan Rider, trumpet, Columbia Pro Cantare celebrates 40 years of the finest in choral music. 8pm; pre-concert lecture 7pm. $20-$25. Jim Rouse Theatre, Columbia. procantare.org
October 30: Howard County Poetry & Literature Society presents Lucille Clifton Poetry Series. Carolyn Forché will discuss her writing, which emerges from the aftermath of periods of human darkness. 4pm. $5. Limited free tickets available; call for details. Coordinated by Americans for the Arts, National Arts and Humanities Month is designed to encourage Americans to explore new facets of the arts and humanities in their lives and to begin a lifelong habit of active participation in the arts and humanities. This month-long celebration grew out of National Arts Week, which Americans for the Arts, along with the National Endowment for the Arts, began in 1985.
