Updates to the New York Philharmonic's 2017–18 Season

The New York Philharmonic has announced updates to its 2017-18 season. Highlights include:

Esa-Pekka Salonen is The Marie-Josée Kravis Composer-in-Residence.

Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5 will replace Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring in performances led by Music Director Designate Jaap van Zweden, February 28-March 3, 2017.
The New York Premiere of Esa-Pekka Salonen's Gambit will replace Schumann's Overture, Scherzo, and Finale in performances led by Paavo Järvi, October 12-14 and 17, 2017.
The U.S. Premiere of Joey Roukens's Boundless (Homage to L.B.) has been added to the Bernstein's Philharmonic: A Centennial Festival program led by Alan Gilbert that also features Bernstein's Serenade (after Plato's Symposium) with violinist Joshua Bell and Symphony No. 1, Jeremiah, with mezzo-soprano Kelley O'Connor, October 25-28 and 31, 2017.

Celebrating his 90th birthday year, trumpet player Doc Severinsen will make his Philharmonic debut joining the 22nd annual Holiday Brass concert, performing alongside the New York Philharmonic Brass and Percussion and former Principal Trumpet Philip Smith as conductor, host, and trumpet.

Christoph Eschenbach will replace Bernard Haitink, who has withdrawn as he is currently in the process of reducing his 2017-18 conducting schedule, in the April 19, 21, and 24, 2018, program featuring Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 22, with Till Fellner as soloist in his New York Philharmonic debut, and Bruckner's Symphony No. 9.
Soprano Tamara Wilson will make her Philharmonic debut inBernstein's Symphony No. 3, Kaddish, November 9, 11, and 14, 2017, as part of Bernstein's Philharmonic: A Centennial Festival; she will also appear November 19, 2017, during the Philharmonic's University Musical Society residency at the University of Michigan. Both performances will be led by Leonard Slatkin. Concert Chorale of New York, directed by James Bagwell, will be the chorus in the November 9, 11, and 14, 2017, performances.

Updates for the season's four Young People's Concerts have been announced:
o Pianist Makoto Ozone will appear on the Young People's Concert Inspirations and Tributes: "Celebrating Leonard Bernstein," November 11, 2017, in New York and November 18, 2017, during the Philharmonic's University Musical Society residency at the University of Michigan. The all-Bernstein program will feature Bernstein's Candide Overture; selections fromOn the Town; Masque from Symphony No. 2,The Age of Anxiety; Profanation from Symphony No. 1, Jeremiah; and selections from West Side Story (vocalists tba). This program replaces the previously announced program featuring works by Bernstein, Copland, and R. Strauss.

Artists and repertoire for the Young People's Concert Inspirations and Tributes: "Classical Echoes," January 6, 2018, led by Jeffrey Kahane, have been announced. The program will feature Mozart's Overture to The Marriage of Figaro and selections from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 17 with Jeffrey Kahane leading from the piano, Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme with cellist Sterling Elliott in his Philharmonic debut, and Haydn's Symphony No. 98.

Assistant Conductor Joshua Gersen will conduct the Young People's Concert Inspirations and Tributes: "An African American Lineage," February 3, 2018, featuring music by Still, Ellington, and Very Young Composers of the New York Philharmonic.

Assistant Conductor Joshua Gersen will conduct the Young People's Concert Inspirations and Tributes: "The Riddle of Shostakovich," May 19, 2018, which will include selections from Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5.

Dates and themes have been announced for Very Young People's Concerts at Merkin Concert Hall.
