Elder Conservatorium Wind Orchestra Presents DARVAZA, August 31

Once again the Elder Conservatorium Wind Orchestra on Saturday 31 August will prove worthy of its many accolades, presenting both well loved, popular works as well as the challenging and new, a delight of contrasts, sounds and colour. An exciting kaleidoscopic concert.

The world premiere of Nicholas Denison's exciting new work Darvaza will featured soloist Andrew Wiering on Marimba and the Wind Orchestra.

The title of the work, Darvaza, is a reference to the Darvaza (Persian: The Gate) gas crater (also known as "The Door to Hell") , a 60 meters wide and 20 meters deep hole in the heart of the hot, expansive Karakum desert in Turkmenistan. The crater (the result of a Soviet gas exploration accident that occurred in 1971) has been on fire for the last 38 years.

Nicholas is currently studying for a Phd after completing a Masters which focussed on music for wind orchestras. Nicholas's first major premiere saw the Elder Conservatorium Wind Orchestra performing his piece Stasis during a lunch hour concert in 2009 to great acclaim.

Percussionist Andrew Wiering was awarded a scholarship to study at the Elder Conservatorium of Music. He won first prize at the Australian National Marimba Competition in 1999 leading him to study at the Bruckner University in Austria, Andrew is currently completing his PhD at the University of Adelaide.

A regular award winner and esteemed performer Andrew has performed with major orchestras, and presented master classes throughout the world. Currently he is recording as an Artist in Residence for ABC Classic FM. Andrew performs exclusively on an Artist Custom Classic Marimba kindly provided by Adams Musical Instruments, the Netherlands.
