The Marzano Center Essentials for Achieving Rigor book series, published by Learning Sciences International, has received early accolades. The first book in the series was named a 2014 USA Best Book Awards Finalist in the Education category and subsequent titles are now hitting the shelves to help educators develop strong instructional skills aligned with Common Core State Standards and other rigorous college and career readiness standards.

This series of instructional guides was written by renowned education authority Robert J. Marzano and a team of experienced education authors to provide specific instructional techniques that move students toward the higher order thinking skills required by increasingly demanding academic standards. Based on Dr. Marzano's instructional and evaluative frameworks, the books provide practical classroom examples and nonexamples to model specific instructional techniques, along with student proficiency scales and suggestions for monitoring progress. They also include modifications and adaptations to help educators meet the needs of various student populations.

In Recording & Representing Knowledge: Classroom Techniques to Help Students Accurately Organize and Summarize Content, authors Robert J. Marzano and Ria Schmidt explore six instructional techniques to help students summarize what they've read, analyze text for specific characteristics, and create organized, succinct written works that demonstrate a deep understanding of the content. As educators develop expertise in teaching these skills, students become more adept at recording and representing knowledge, both linguistically and nonlinguistically, so they can better retain critical information.

Today's learners must also be able to use comparisons, classifications, metaphors, and analogies to generalize, draw conclusions, and refine schema, ultimately deepening their understanding of the content. In Examining Similarities & Differences: Classroom Techniques to Help Students Deepen Their Understanding, authors Robert J. Marzano and Connie Scoles-West address these needs as they discuss ways to teach students how to examine similarities and differences within the critical content they are learning.

"The first book in the Marzano Center Essentials for Achieving Rigor series has already been recognized by the USA Book News Awards as a leading resource on a critical classroom instructional strategy for teaching higher-order thinking skills," says Robert Clouse, President of the Learning Sciences publishing division. "Learning Sciences International looks forward to bringing the entire series into circulation for educators worldwide."
