Tory Gates' new young adult fiction novel A Moment in the Sun follows 16-year old Rei Murata as she uncovers the hidden world of the hikikomori in Japan.

Rei Murata is a 16-year-old living in Japan. But though her current life is stable, Rei's past
haunts her. When her mother died suddenly, her father descended into depression and drug use. Coupled with a live-in partner who had no use for ten-year-old Rei, her life became one long dark night.

Eventually, she resolved to run away. After finding no help in Tokyo, her only option for
safety is to turn to the Free Center.

There she finds friends in the form of the center's director, the energetic Yuki, and his
number two, an ex-gang member named Misao. She begins to regain her dignity also with the help of a young woman named Yui, an upwardly mobile artist who has Rei's back.

With the help of her newfound friends, Rei discovers the world of the hikikomori, or people who have willingly closed themselves off from society. Together they begin to provide help for these lost and hurt individuals, because everyone deserves their moment in the sun!
