CLEAR LAKE, Iowa

Author Tom L. Sawyer reveals an American saga that revisits history and spans several generation. "Catskill Family" (published by Xlibris) chronicles the journey of a man named Scott who sailed to New York with his pregnant wife and their three children. This voyage marks the beginning of their story.

In 1822, 51 passengers in steerage faced the challenge of ocean passage aboard the ship Camillus. Among the passengers was Scott Sawyer, along with his pregnant wife, Catherine, and their three young children. As they neared the wharf in New York, they welcomed their fourth child, Camilla. For 20 years, the family grew in the Catskill country near Bovina, N. Y. This is where Scott's son, Robert, learned to farm and realized the American dream of owning his own land and supporting his own growing family. He also became involved in the Anti-Rent War in 1845. After moving his family to Illinois and then to Traer Iowa, he met an untimely death. His strong wife, Louisa, raised their 10 children to become successful and prosperous citizens.

More than a book of birth and death dates, "Catskill Family" is an inspiring tale of one family that traces its roots from Scotland. Sawyer looks back into his past and celebrates where his family came from, revealing their many struggles to survive in a foreign land. He hopes that his family appreciates what their ancestors went through.
