ARLINGTON, Texas -

The natural world and the fleeting experience of time inspire this new collection of poems by a retired chemist and geologist, Thomas Hooker. Describing his insight on everything from a butterfly's dreams to the wooden bones of a shipwreck, the author presents his aesthetic view of nature and the spirit in this new book, written with a deft hand.

"Silent Woods: Beyond the Blue Door" offers dramatic imagery, such as in the poem "The empty set," which recalls days gone by, when youths played on a swing set that has turned now to rust. The words of "Covered bridge" reverberate just as its old planks do from clattering hooves. The collection features titles like "New moon," "The storm," "Tree of thorns" and "Buttermilk falls," concluding with the selection "Chasing shadows," which brings to mind the pending shift of fall into winter.

Author Thomas Hooker is a retired chemist and geologist with a bachelor's degree in geology from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. He is an accomplished songwriter and plays acoustic guitar. Hooker, who lives with his wife, Kristen, in Fort Worth, Texas, spending summer and fall in Northport, Mich. He was raised in western Pennsylvania. Hooker enjoys painting and writing.
